4. Biofabricating Dyes and Materials#

This week I worked on dyeing natural fabrics using natural dye.

Step 1 Gathering all the materials for the laboratory like Scale, thermometer, PH measuring strips, stove and pots, multiple containers, natural fibers and natural dying substances

Step 2

Grind the Alum to facilitate disolving it in warm water, adding the WOF quantity which is around 10% of the weight of the fibers.

Step 3

For this lesson we split among the mexican fabimpact members some of the dying materials In my case I was in charge to boil foe half an hour the purple onion, and the beetroot, I also worked with black beans, this were left soaking in cold water for a day to let the dying chemical be transfered to the water. its important to measure the PH value of each dye to have quality control.

Step 4

After washing previously with baking soda the vegetable fibers and with neutral soap the wool I did the scouring bath for 30 minutes using the Alum and then split the fibers on different containers to be fill with the different dyeing substances

I WILL FINISH TODAY THE DYING PROCESS, ALL IS LEFT IS THE LAST PART OF CHANGING THE COLOR PALLETE BY GIVING A MORDANT TREATMENT
