Growing bio-materials

I grew kombucha from week 6 to be used in a piece for the collection.

In week 6, I utilized the recipe for Kombucha as follows.

KOMBUCHA

  • 1L of water
  • 1,5 to 3 grams of tea (we used black tea, but it can be -any tea, depending on the color of the material you want).
  • 100 grams of sugar
  • Vinegar from 0 to 100 ml (depending on the pH of your liquid)
  • A bit of a SCOBY solution
  • SCOBY mother (10cm ΓΈ)

After drying for 2 weeks, my sheet was ready to be used togwther with the metal rode I fabricated before with the lathe in the lab.

Here you can see a close up of the texture, similar to the skin of the animal.

I assembled the sheet with the the brass parts and chains like the other pieces.

FOR THE CRYSTALLIZATION

In week 9, I utilized the recipe for crystallization as follows.

CRYSTALLIZATION

I used alum and the recipe is the same as below:

  • We start here by boiling 1000 ml of water.
  • We need 400 g of alum to be dissolved.
  • Then put the boiling water in the pot.
  • Then with a coffee filter, we filtered the solution inside the glass jar.
  • We should prepare something to put inside the jar
  • without attaching the walls or the bottom.

After 1 day the piece was completly crystalized.

This is the first photo when it is in the pot and the final result. If you want to see more information about the recipe, you can go back to week 9.
