6. Computational Couture#

This week we had to design and develop our grasshopper definition to create 3 Dimensional patterns to 3D print.

About Grasshopper#

Grasshopper is a programm who permitts to explore new shapes using generative algorithms,is a graphical algorithm editor tightly integrated with Rhino’s 3-D modeling tools. If you’re using Rhino6 Grasshopper is included, otherwise you can downlode it for free here. Grasshopper’s comunity is very active, so if you have a problem you can write into the forum, the webite also contain also many tutorials and plug-in.

About Computational Couture#

“The Computational Couture focus on expanding the horizons of dress making towards an algorithmic approach, and taking design beyond the physical functions of the body (movement, protection, temperature regulation) towards the evolution of cultural expression”

Noumena

Computational couture looks at the creation of exclusive custom-fitted clothing (typical of haute couture) through the lens of a systemic approach, extending the sartorial techniques with 3D modeling and computation-based approaches developed in Rhinoceros and the visual programming environment Grasshopper.

How to deal with Grasshopper#

This week we started learning Grasshopper. We started the week with a lesson from Aldo Sollazzo and the day after with Eugenio Bettucchi. They explained us a little of Grasshopper; It was quiet hard to follow them and we were all shocked but then Teresa found a fantastic guide that explain Grasshopper from A to Z! There’s also some tutorial step by step inside. Amazing! So helpfull! If you want to learn how to use Grasshopper is really recommended.

I started playing with Grasshopper following the tutorial in the guide. Here you can see some the exercise I did.

My project#

For this assigments I wanted to create something 3D to print on a very thin textile, like tulle or organza.

I din’t succeed particularly well! We had some trouble with the 3D print at the begging! The filament wasn’t extruded correctly. Then with Teresa and Wendy we try to fix it but it still wasn’t work properly. At the end we find out that there was somethig fluffy that was blocking the wheel of the extruder!
