About me¶
Hi! I am Gudrita Lape. I work as interdisciplinary artist, mostly in the field of performance, installation and mixed textiles.
My background¶
I am mostly known by my artist name Gudrita Lape, but I was born as Gintaré Maciulskyté in 1990, Lithuania. From the age of 10 Iceland became my homebase. I have been interested in art since early childhood and planned on studying it from the age of 12. In 2012 I graduated from Iceland Art Academy with a BA degree in Fine Arts. Before that, during one of my family visits to Lithuania a friend showed me the textile department in the Vilnius Art Academy and half a year later I applied to go as exchange student there January-June 2011. That is where I met textile artist, former head of textile department and then vice-dean, Egle Ganda Bogdaniene. We were interestes in many similar issues and right after my graduation I got a a scholarship for Leonardo da Vinci internship to work as her assistant for 16 weeks. That is where I learned some basic textile skills and kept experimenting on my own through installations and performances. The choices I make in art have been widely influenced by my migration and epilepsy diagnosis back in 2012, which is when I needed a lot of energy to do anything creative due to medicine side effects. In 2019 after lowering the medicine my memories of textile endeavours started coming back and in 2020 I started making bespoke headdresses under the name Skar-e-Lei.
