MID TERM PRESENTATION

SLIDES

what

Some things have changed since the first presentation of the project in December until the MIDTERM Presentation. One of them was the idea of what I would like to do... at first, I wanted to make a live exhibition piece, which would interact with the viewer/user while indicating the level of water pollution. However, in the course of my research, I saw that the water problem in Brazil was deeper, so instead of making a complaint about the level of water pollution and generating a discussion around it, now I want to bring a complaint about the origins of water problems in brazil (which began with colonization, with the agrarian elite strengthening in the pre-republic period, schemes involving politicians and the privatization of water in the interest of large companies, among others). As this involves many concepts and subjects, now the work will be an artwork of which the final result will be the video (with narration) of the piece in action.

why

Here, I summarized all my research around the water debate.

As I decided to do something more of personal expression through art, it was important to research some references that work with art and textiles.

In the process, I found a text by Karla Girotto, about what it means to be an artist today:

who - for/with whom

This excerpt from Karla Girotto was extremely important to redirect who my work is being done for. If before my work was aimed at raising the awareness of the observer, now it is to materialize the cry trapped in the throats of activists who, as much as they mobilize their anxieties into action, sometimes find themselves trapped in the feeling of impotence in the face of the complexity of the problems that are willing to face.

how

Here some projects that were references for the work summarized in a visual panel.

And the tools that helped me materialize my project research.

The final idea:

considerations

Up until this point, my project has been largely theoretical and not very practical in the face of information overload and creative paralysis. The next step is to design all my tests to run the final product.

FEEDBACK

During the feedback I received praise for the rigor of my research and that it makes sense that I was so excited about the process!

Some notes made by the evaluators (including Ricardo O'Nascimento, Becky Earley, Anastasia and Cecilia):

  • In view of all this research, what message do I want to convey (shock, awareness or problem solving)? How strong is this message?
  • Take care that the project is too complex to the point that the observer does not understand;
  • I can convey multiple layers of information to different viewers, perhaps using video as a support (video can be interactive with the viewer);
  • Thinking about the installation, what does it smell like? What's the sound? Are there visual supports to help the viewer understand the message?
  • Think about the narrative of the video, will it have a narrator? Will I be the narrator?
  • Suggestion of placing hospital saline bags instead of cups for liquids;
  • Ricardo commented that he has the impression that I am the type of person who overthinks and he is completely right! He gave me the suggestion not to overcomplicate things, because I don't have much time.

Ricardo also commented that a Brazilian artist who can be an inspiration to me is Elen Nas:

Trip TV: "Discotecagem dentro d' água" (Sereia Lab, 2a Edição, Caixa Cultural São Paulo, 2009). from elen nas on Vimeo.

They also commented that they can already visualize the final product, the smell and the sound of the entire installation, which made me very happy.
