3. Circular fashion¶
This week we worked in modular garments and creating our own master piece
Inspiration¶
Wenufoye that means “Canelo del cielo” is the Mapuche Flag, you can find a Cultrún in the middle of it. The Cultrún is the Mapuche drum, in its flat surface, which represents the surface of the earth, you can see a circular design of the Mapuche worldview,
The Four cardinal points and between them, the sun, the moon and the stars; symbols of world knowledge.
The Real Story¶
I only tell you this cause before I left Chile, I was checking through all my stuff and I found a medal that someone once gave me.
Then I stayed a long time looking at it and deciding if I should bring it or not hahahah, I didn't. But her figure stayed in my mind and that’s where my inspiration for this assignment came from.
Process¶
When i found a good photo, i started to draw some doddles and after simplifying i went from this,
to this,
Finally, I grabbed my scissors and began to see what I could get out of this figure, how I could connect it between them and start to make a plane with it. Bonus track, I wanted to be able to connect the figure with itself.
Then I passed the sketch to Rhino and designed my figure with the exact measurements.
The second step was that I wanted to prototype with two different materials, one that would allow me to iterate multiple times and a final one. I use “Hilado 240”, that is a thicker type of paper, to iterate. Change some measures in the process and find my final piece.
For this material, I use the following laser cutting settings:
For Cut: 100% SPEED, 11% POWER
Once I got my pieces cut, I started to assemble the “fabric” and see if I could hem it.
Like I have a good result, I decided to cut the pieces in the final material “Goma Eva” or Foamy. I wanted to make them out of felt but I couldn't find material for direct purchase, so I used what I had on hand.
For this material, i use the following laser cutting settings.
For Cut: 100% SPEED, 25% POWER
