W02. DIGITAL BODIES¶
First assignment experimenting 3D body scanning, learning at a new software for 3D modeling and slicing the model for lazer cutting. For finally, getting my very first beautiful "Venus is stuck to the Wall".
Some of my references¶
To start with, for finding my Art Direction for this assignement, I jumped into my Artbooks in order to analyse some concepts around the body representation and I chose to focus on female. Then it starts with:
Primary body¶
Venus figurines of the European paleolithic: symbol of fertility.
Symbolic body¶
La Victoire de Samothrace, petite galerie du Louvre. Petite Galerei du louvre
Constructivist body¶
Inspired by the 1970 film for Das Triadische Ballett by Oscar Schlemmer-Music re-composed and film re-edited by Knife Machine.
Today sculptural body¶
Xavier Veilhan, Bleu Richard Rogers, 2009, Blanc Emmanuelle 2007, Jaune Sandra 2007
Object/Erotic Body¶
Hans Bellemer, La poupée 1935
What body?!¶
Erwin Wurm, Freud's rectifications, 2004
Social body¶
Will Dorner’s best performances – Bodies in Urban Spaces
Old body¶
Meltem Isik, Twice into the stream / 2011
Process of Creation¶
So I want to create a body female part that I can fix to the wall like a "coat hook". I want to use the mannequin concept for Gravité, the Artbagconcept that I'm working on. The work of Ervin Wurm inspired me a lot. I want a funny posture with a sculpural aesthetic.
1st Step: Fotos¶
- Stick to the wall
- Cut Out
2nd Step: Body scanning¶
I was so excited to test it. My dear colleague Louise, helped me out with the scanning. She did a really good job. We used the Knet 360 XBOX. Tips: The thing is that you have to turn really slowly around the body and go several times around the body.
Getting my 1st 3D Model¶
I was so happy with the result because it was not static and looked like a romantic greek sculpture.
3rd Step: Rhino or not¶
Got some difficulties with the use of the software. Because I decided to keep my scan I wasn't able to cut the body parts that I wanted to remove. So I used - Tinkercad Here is the video explanation of the cutting.
- Commands book for Rhino
- Commands for removing pieces:
- Poli ligne
- Extrud crd
- Split
- Select corps/ select plan/enter
Slicer¶
This assisgnement is like climbing a mountain. Slicer was like a little break. I liked to do different tests with the materials, curves lines... The most important technical part was to enter all the numbers regarding thinkness, how big I wanted it...Here is the video.
From Slicer to Illustrator¶
From slicer I got the patterns of my 3Dpuzzle model. So I needed to: 1. Optimize the pieces 2. Clean up some of the curves due to holes 3. Do the pdf files for the lazer cutting
Upload pdf sheets to illustrator
Illustrator parameters for the lazer cutting
- Curves selection: All in the same color
- Grave in green - 0,01 dot R: 0 V: 255 B: 0
- Cutout in blue - 0,01 dot R: 0 V:0 B: 255
- Margin 0,5mm

Ready for the Lazer cutting :+1¶
We went to the Tactilab
To start with, Julie explained us about the commands, how to import our files, use it with Trotec, of course she talked about security.... We did some tests in order to get the good numbers for not burning the material and the lab...
Datas: 1. Panels dimensions: 730x430 mm 2. Thinkness: 25mm 3. Honeycomb Cardboard Settings for Laser-cutting Cutting : Power 40 | Speed 1 Engraving : P20 | S2
Assembling process¶
I was so impatient to see how it looks that I totally forgot about the motion. Here the motion from slicer.
I stuck the pieces with glue. For the next one I will use a stick tu put in it.
