MOODBOARDS
For my photoshoot, I proposed two moodboards with different atmospheres.
Version 1
In the first version, The atmosphere emphasizes on a deep connection to nature and a sense of beauty, focusing on the idea of embracing death, and the cyclical nature of existence. However, due to the unpredictable weather in Amsterdam, I felt doubtful towards this proposal.
Version 2
In the second version, the atmosphere expresses respect for the deceased, and an appreciation for the delicate balance between life and death. The imagery combines elements of ritual and classical art to create a narrative about the end-of-life process.
With the use of a dark, almost black background, I tend to create a stark contrast with the light-colored garments, highlighting the subjects and adding a dramatic tone.
I decided that I would go for version 2 because it gives me better control over indoor lighting for shooting, and it also makes dressing the model easier.
LOCATION
After deciding the moodboard, I decided that my photoshoot will take place at the Theatrum Anatomicum at Waag, a medieval building in Amsterdam originally constructed as a city gate in 1488. The room matches perfectly with the atmosphere of my moodboard. Moreover the Theatrum Anatomicum is a symbol of the historical development of medical science and the cultural significance of public education and engagement with scientific knowledge, which I think runs parallel with the concept of my project.
VIDEO¶
For my video, I would like to highlight the sustainable and zero-waste approach in the creation of biodegradable burial garments made from rose petals and natural fibers, showcasing each step of the circular working process.
I would like to showcase each stage of my working process to the audience:
Step 1: Sorting and Dehydrating
Detailed shots of rose petals and leaves being sorted and placed in a dehydrator.
Step 2: Creating the Dye Bath
Footage of the dye bath being prepared with rose leaves.
Step 3: Casting Alginate on Wool
Clips of the leftover dye water being used to cast alginate onto wool.
Step 4: Creating the Velvety Fabric
Visuals of rose petals being scattered on top of the alginate to create the fabric.
The video will be closed by displaying shots of the finished biodegradable burial garments, followed by the process of making the garments.
