Concept | JUTE TRANSLATIONS¶
5 Ws who, what, when, where, why¶
who¶
Me and you and us.
The main charcter of this project is the very possibility of the stuff around us to become something else than just what we percieve it as it is, use it as it is or as it was. This project works with jute fibers, derived from discarded jute bags that are used all around the world for transportation of different goods, such as grains, cocoa beans, maize, rice, seeds and coffee beans, creating a possibilities for different stakeholders to be involved in the process of making a new materiality more ecological.
what¶
We can plan our materials and built environment.
Creating affordable alternatives to synthetic materials by implementing circular design principles and prototyping with wasted resources. The goal is to develop a sturdy material resembling wooden boards. Wooden boards have a wide range of uses, and by replacing them with jute-based boards, the project helps to reduce deforestation. In addition to creating new biomaterials through circular principles, the project also emphasizes the importance of regenerative design practices. To enhance regenerative potential, seeds were added to some of the biomaterials during the creation process. The idea is that these materials and objects could serve as a growing platform for nature once they are disposed of.
when¶
The implementation of developed biomaterials is placed in the present. With all the thinking about our common futures and by that, different survival speculations that might evolve on our planet, the goal of this project is to act now and prevent the dark scenarios of unlivable environment due to the many pollution crisis we are facing today.
where¶
The goal is to try to shift the experimental and learning phase of crfating biomaterials to the one, that they can be produced on a larger scale* but most of all, to the one that is affordable and useful in the present day. Although the process of developing a proper material is a verrrrry long and pricey one, I wil try to portrait how very little we can do to have better, if not a positive, impact on our environment. So the first phase of creation is conducted in the FabLab Barcelona using simple and very few tools. The second one would be the future development of this project, where I will seek for a more professional approach - if there even is one?, or better to say, professional testings for the developed bioimaterials. While jute bags are used around the world in large quantities, the project could potentially have a wider impact, not only a local one.. but let's start there first..
why¶
Preventing harmfull technofossils. Bridging the gap between anthropogenic mass and planetarian biomass, and try to blur the divison of artifical and biological matter.
Using all-natural discarded resource in a form of fibers, derived from jute textile also known as burlap, hessian cloth and gunny cloth to plan our material world in sync wit a natural one. Designing alternative materials to produce a lower value objects of 'mass' production.
