Multidisciplinary Designer | Chemist | Sustainability Advocate

"Designing sustainable futures through science, craft, and technology."

I’m Fatemeh Mollaie, a multidisciplinary expert working at the intersection of design, chemistry, and digital fabrication. With a strong background in Chemical and Textile Engineering, I specialize in creating materials and technologies that balance scientific rigor with human-centered design.

As a UI/UX designer, I bring a unique combination of science-driven accuracy and creative problem-solving to every project. I’m passionate about crafting intuitive, people-focused digital interfaces that combine both form and function.

My recent application to the Fabricademy program at FabLab Armenia reflects my commitment to pushing boundaries in wearable tech, advanced materials, and eco-conscious design. I’m excited to explore how digital fabrication can help build a more sustainable future.

📚 Publications

I’ve authored a book and several peer-reviewed articles on smart textiles and eco-friendly material systems.

Previous Work & Projects

Second Life

I believe in second chances—not just for people, but for materials, too. In my environment, I try to see potential where others see waste.

Old denim jeans have become elegant furniture covers, stitched into new stories. Even worn-out t-shirts now live on as cozy cushion covers, each thread carrying traces of a former identity—now reimagined with care and purpose.

This work is not just about reuse; it’s about honoring the beauty of transformation.

Nature’s Weave: A Home for One, A Heritage for All

I’m deeply committed to reviving traditional and indigenous arts, especially when they align with sustainable practices.

This handcrafted cat nest is made with palm tree fiber thread, using the ancient technique of Borya weaving (also known as mat weaving).

The right-hand images showcase the versatile benefits of palm tree bark in traditional construction and remedies. The left-hand images highlight the fine threads extracted and woven into functional objects.

Historical Context

Borya weaving is believed to be older than textile weaving itself, with samples discovered in Iraq dating back to 5000 BCE. In Iran, archaeological finds at key sites include:

  • Shahdad, Kerman (3rd millennium BCE)
  • Tepe Yahya, Arzuiyeh (3800–4500 BCE)
  • Tal-e Eblis, Bardsir (late 5th millennium BCE)
  • Shahr-e Sukhteh, Zabol (3rd millennium BCE)

These woven mats were primarily used to cover floors, roofs, and interior walls.

This shelter is a modern tribute—honoring the craftsmanship of the past while advocating for sustainable creation today.

Selected Projects: Bridging Design, Science & Technology

Digital Fabrication & 3D Printing

I conducted research on natural fiber-reinforced composites, focusing on improving the performance of Cordenka fibers. Leveraging 3D printing technologies (such as 3D Systems), I developed textile prototypes that merge chemistry with cutting-edge fabrication.

UI/UX Design

I led the design of a user-centered platform, creating an intuitive interface that enhanced customer engagement. The outcome was a sleek, modern design balancing aesthetics and usability.

Website Development – Crypto Platform

As part of a web development team, I helped build a platform offering services like P2P trading, spot trading, margin trading, and staking. My role involved both UI/UX and technical coordination to ensure security and ease of use.

Textile Engineering with Advanced Materials

Drawing on my background in chemistry, I’ve worked on projects that explore eco-conscious materials for textile applications. I’m especially interested in how digital fabrication and smart materials can redefine the textile landscape for a greener future.
