My documentation¶
I was born with a brain cyst, which was surgically removed when I was 11 years old. As a result of the surgery, I no longer have a Broca's area in my brain — the region typically responsible for speech production and language processing. Despite this, I consider myself incredibly fortunate: I am able to speak fluently, and even communicate in several different languages. However, reading and writing remain significant challenges for me.
To adapt, I have developed a system that works well for my needs. I primarily use Apple’s Dictation software on my devices to speak my thoughts, allowing the technology to transcribe my words into text. Once the initial dictation is complete, I use ChatGPT-4.0 to review and refine what I’ve dictated, helping to catch most of the errors and improve clarity. Afterward, I rely on the "Speak Selection" feature to have the text read back to me aloud, giving me a final way to verify that everything sounds correct.
When documenting my work or projects, I also take copious photographs. Visual documentation helps me keep a clear record of what I have done, since my visual memory is strong and reliable. Although this process — dictating, editing, and cross-checking — can take a little longer than traditional writing methods, my excellent memory and careful attention to detail ensure that everything comes together effectively in the end.
Through patience, technology, and creativity, I have found ways to work around the challenges I face. I believe that with the right tools and strategies, it's possible to turn obstacles into opportunities for innovation and growth.
This site will document my 13-week journey through Fabrication Academy, leading up to my final project. My focus is on costume-making, with a particular emphasis on creating lightweight designs. Intricate costumes often require numerous materials and complex structures, which can make them heavy and difficult to move in. My goal is to find ways to maintain the visual impact and detail of elaborate costumes while keeping them as light and wearable as possible.
