test

Hello! I’m Gunjan, a Visual & Spatial Designer, Educator, and budding Futurist. I hold an MA in Graphic Communication Design from Central Saint Martins, UAL in London, and a B.Arch from CEPT University in Ahmedabad. With nearly a decade of consulting experience and over five years in teaching, I currently serve as an Assistant Professor at Somaiya School of Design.

My research focuses on speculative fiction and futures, particularly exploring data privacy and surveillance through the lens of digital safety, gender, and technology. I previously examined gender and sexuality in space in my undergraduate thesis, and I am deeply interested in the ethical implications of design and the role of designers within socio-cultural and political contexts.

As an architect, my work spanned macro-scale projects such as urban planning and institutional design. In my practice as a Visual Communication Designer, I shifted to a more detailed focus, engaging in concept design, visual design, and branding for various clients.

For the past two years, I have been engaged in immersive workshops with artisans in Kutch under Somaiya Vidyavihar University. This hands-on experience has allowed me to learn traditional textile techniques such as weaving, batik printing, and ajrakh printing. I am continually inspired by the intricate processes involved in transforming threads into textiles, and I’m eager to explore textiles as a material in my design practice.

As a South Asian Kashmiri Pandit, I bring generational knowledge of stitching, knitting, and weaving, which I was exposed to as a child in a displaced community. My grandmother’s creations, from knitted sweaters to beautifully remodeled cushion covers, have deeply influenced my appreciation for craftsmanship and the importance of preserving traditional knowledge.

My design practice and research interests inform my teaching, allowing me to provide real-world perspectives and practical insights to my students. After five years of teaching, I feel a strong urge to return to the student mode to continue learning and experimenting, enhancing my skill set to enrich my teaching methodologies.

Throughout my career, I have explored the intersections of space and image-making, focusing on the tactile and digital aspects of design. I am particularly interested in how everyday waste can be transformed into meaningful creations through experimentation.

At Fabri, I am excited about the opportunity to explore fabric and textile making in an academic setting, integrating my love for the physical with my passion for the digital. As a lifelong DIY enthusiast, I look forward to tinkering and embarking on guided explorations in this dynamic field.
