Hello there!¶
I’m Gunjan -- a Visual & Spatial Designer, Educator, and budding Futurist.
I hold an MA in Graphic Communication Design from Central Saint Martins, UAL (London, UK), and a B.Arch from CEPT University (Ahmedabad, India). With nearly a decade of consulting experience and over five years in teaching, I am currently an Assistant Professor at the Somaiya School of Design.
My architectural journey has taken me through large-scale projects in urban planning and institutional design. Over time, my practice evolved to focus on the finer details as a Visual Communication Designer — from concept development and branding to crafting meaningful visual narratives for diverse clients.
In recent years, my personal research has focused on speculative fiction and futures, particularly exploring data privacy and surveillance through the lens of digital safety, gender, and technology. I previously examined gender and sexuality in space in my undergraduate thesis, and I am deeply interested in the ethical implications of design and the role of designers within socio-cultural and political contexts.
As a South Asian Kashmiri Pandit, I carry generational knowledge of stitching, knitting, and weaving — skills I observed in my displaced community while growing up. My grandmother’s handmade creations, from cozy sweaters to artfully upcycled cushion covers, instilled in me a lasting respect for craftsmanship and the value of traditional knowledge systems.
For the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of working closely with artisans in Kutch through immersive workshops under Somaiya Vidyavihar University. This experience has deepened my understanding of traditional techniques such as weaving, bandhani, batik, and ajrakh printing — inspiring me to explore textiles as both material and medium in my design practice.
My design practice and research interests continually inform my teaching. I aim to offer students real-world insights, grounded in experimentation and hands-on experience. After five enriching years in academia, I feel the call to return to the role of a student — to continue learning and experimenting, enhancing my skill set and evolving my approach to design education.
Across my journey, I have explored the intersections of space and image-making, exploring both the tactile and the digital aspects of design. I’m particularly drawn to the potential of transforming everyday waste into thoughtful, purposeful creations through experimentation.
At Fabri, I’m excited to explore fabric and textile-making in a deeper, academic context. As a lifelong DIY enthusiast, I look forward to tinkering, learning, and experimenting — bringing together the physical and digital in meaningful ways.
