13. Implications and applications

This week we are going to talk about the final project. I still have a lot of doubts and ideas to work on during these 3 months so let's talk about them! I want to explore how I can combine the techniques and materials I’ve learned so far—like biomaterials, modular design, and wearables—into something cohesive and meaningful. I’m also curious about incorporating interactivity, whether through electronics, movement, or responsive materials, to make the project dynamic and engaging. There’s still a lot to decide, but I’m excited to start narrowing my focus and experimenting further!"

How could we...

  1. How might we make interactive textiles that engage both visually and functionally?

  2. How might we design a system that combines sustainable materials with smart technologies?

  3. How might we ensure the final project is both aesthetically pleasing and purposeful?

Examine everything.

  1. What materials were used to create this product?

  2. Where do these materials originate from?

  3. What is the environmental impact of these materials?

  4. What happens to the product at the end of its life?

  5. Can the materials be conserved, reused, or recycled?

  6. How could this product be improved?

The idea

For the project, I have been considering creating a small handbag collection using locally sourced raw materials, aiming for self-sufficiency and sustainability. I also want to explore ways to make the bags self-cleaning, incorporating innovative materials or technologies that reduce maintenance and improve longevity.

my next question is how ?

As you already know, my background is in fashion design, specializing in pattern making with a focus on crochet.

For the project, I have been considering creating a small handbag collection using locally sourced raw materials, aiming for self-sufficiency and sustainability. I also want to explore ways to make the bags self-cleaning, incorporating innovative materials or technologies that reduce maintenance and improve longevity. Given my background as a fashion designer specializing in pattern making, particularly with crochet, I plan to integrate intricate, hand-crafted elements into the designs, blending traditional techniques with modern, eco-conscious innovations.

Previous work

During my previous work, I specialized in creating handbags using crochet techniques and a variety of yarns. This hands-on approach allowed me to explore intricate patterns and textures, giving each piece a unique and personal touch. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern design sensibilities, I was able to create functional yet stylish accessories. This experience has provided me with a solid foundation in design and material manipulation, which I am now looking to build upon in my current project.

Why, What, Who, When, Where?

For my final project, I want to create a handbag using imigwegwe leaves, a locally grown material found in Rwanda. imigwegwe looks like agave sisalana leaves, it is unique in its properties and texture. By transforming this natural fiber into a functional and stylish handbag, I aim to showcase its potential as a sustainable, homegrown alternative, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern design. This project highlights the beauty of local resources while promoting eco-conscious fashion

why?

The reason I want to work on this project is to highlight the uniqueness of our locally grown materials. In our country, it is often challenging to find the necessary tools and resources, making it essential to explore sustainable, homegrown alternatives. By integrating features like self-cleaning properties, these bio-fabricated materials can offer innovative, eco-friendly solutions while celebrating local creativity and addressing practical challenges

what?

The Umugwegwe handbag is a unique creation crafted from locally grown leaves, showcasing the beauty and versatility of our natural resources. By utilizing umugwegwe fibers, this bag not only celebrates our rich cultural heritage but also promotes sustainable practices. The use of these locally sourced materials highlights the potential for eco-friendly alternatives in design, offering a stylish and practical accessory that reflects both innovation and a deep connection to our environment.
