WHO?¶

This project is dedicated to women whose passion lies in locally sourced and heritage-rich materials, especially those rooted in African traditions. It is driven by Ingabire Joselyne, whose work gracefully blends traditional craftsmanship with modern design. As I continue developing my Bello Craft bags, they have become the foundation of my business, Bello Craft. These bags reflect my brand’s ethos—merging heritage techniques with contemporary aesthetics to create unique, eco-conscious pieces. More than just products, Bello Craft is a vision: a celebration of handmade artistry, a commitment to sustainability, and an inspiration for mindful fashion. To support this vision, I have created a blueprint to share with the public and included a catalog that highlights the materials, samples, and design possibilities behind the Gisubizo Handbag.

I carefully selected the yarn to ensure durability and aesthetic appeal, creating a design that is both functional and stylish. The Gisubizo Handbags are a unique and sustainable fashion collection crafted from imigwegwe, a locally grown plant fiber in Rwanda. This natural material, known for its strength and versatility, has long been used in traditional craftsmanship, and the collection seeks to elevate it into contemporary design. By blending heritage techniques with modern aesthetics, Gisubizo Handbags offer an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic materials, promoting sustainable luxury while honoring Rwandan cultural identity. Each handbag is carefully designed to highlight the beauty of natural fibers, ensuring durability, functionality, and timeless elegance. Beyond fashion, the collection also supports local artisans, encouraging ethical production and preserving traditional skills. WHY?¶

The Gisubizo Handbags project is inspired by the desire to blend sustainability with local craftsmanship. By using imigwegwe, a natural fiber grown in Rwanda, this project seeks to create a high-quality, eco-friendly alternative to synthetic materials in fashion. The focus is on durability, timeless design, and supporting local artisans, all while honoring Rwandan heritage. However, here in Rwanda, we faced the challenge of a lack of readily available materials, which required us to find innovative solutions.

Despite these challenges, the project aims to offer a sustainable solution to the fashion industry, proving that beautiful, functional products can be created without compromising the environment. By leveraging the unique properties of imigwegwe, the Gisubizo Handbags represent a fusion of traditional techniques and modern design, bringing a fresh perspective to ethical fashion
