Concept

CHAOS

The objective of this collection is to express the profound internal conflict I am experiencing, particularly the battle between the ego, superego, and id, and the emotional impact of these psychological forces. I aim to capture the feelings of tension and loss of identity that arise from these struggles, highlighting the emotional fluctuations and internal disconnection they create.

The conflict I want to emphasize revolves around the ongoing struggle to understand and express myself amidst feelings of fragmentation, isolation, and psychological turmoil. Through this collection, I reflect my journey through these challenges, offering a visual representation of the complex layers of internal conflict and their impact on my existence and perception of the world.

The Soul as a Non-Material Substance: • Descartes considered the soul (or mind) to be an independent, non-material substance distinct from the physical body. • Its primary function is thinking(Cogito), meaning the soul is the sole source of consciousness and perception. • His famous statement: “I think, therefore I am”(Cogito, ergo sum), demonstrated the soul’s existence as the foundation of consciousness.

Sigmund Freud

• This instinctual nature reflects unconscious chaos, uncontrolled and primal.

• Example: A person experiencing extreme hunger might act irrationally or aggressively to obtain food.

• The Superego:

• Represents societal values, moral principles, and social norms acquired from family and culture.

• When the superego becomes overly rigid, it can cause feelings of guilt or anxiety, creating psychological chaos due to constant internal pressure.

• The Ego:

• Represents the rational part of the psyche, mediating between the id and the superego.

• The ego operates according to the reality principle, seeking to satisfy desires in socially acceptable ways.

• Chaos arises when the pressures from the id or the superego overwhelm the ego, leading to internal conflicts and psychological disturbances.

Sigmund Freud addressed the concept of chaos as an integral part of human nature and its relationship with instincts and internal conflicts. Here is a detailed explanation of his views on chaos:

  1. Chaos in the Structure of the Human Psyche

Freud divided the psyche into three main components, with conflicts among them being the source of internal chaos:

• The Id:

• Represents the instinctual part of the psyche, storing basic desires like hunger, sexuality, and aggression.

• The id operates according to the pleasure principle, seeking immediate gratification of desires without regard for rules or consequences.
