This week looking into difrent modular system and inspration from other places to be able to use shapes and other gemetry to create a pettern.

References & Inspiration

Inspired by the past work of another student with butterflys I descied to take the same coecpet but try and simplify waht they had done to be able to create simalar style to orgamy butterfly. It seams fitting beacuse the butterfly tranforms in a new way to be able to get its wings.


Tools

Adobe Illustrator- For setting the shape design and rough layout for the pattern

Rihno 3D modeling- To get all the exact sizing and placement for the cuts and finalize the pattern

I also need to set up the laser cutter. With the appripare setting with the matterial tha had a thikness of 1.20mm polyester material

Laser Cutter- for applying the design hands, scissors, and tweezers to ideate and create the design.

Process and workflow

Step one was to ideate and research models of other interlocking systems. Later, I searched for a model of the shape I wanted to create. A past student's butterfly pattern inspired me, but I wanted to simplify it and make it similar to Japanese origami, with a more manila and clean look. I also came back to nature for inspiration.

Step 1 Ideationa and Design

I started by creating a pattern I first saw to better understand how the interlocking system works physically. From there, I took the imagery of a butterfly and simplified it to create a minimal butterfly. I tried several ways to interlock them, but in the end, I made three variations: one male, one female, and one hybrid to have a better range. After that, I made a felt textile sample to make sure it was working.

Step 2 The laser cut nesting

Afterward, I uploaded the file from the rhino to the laser cutter. I used some fabric that we had in the fab lab, a left polyester fabric. I set up the settings on the computer and did a couple of tests to ensure it worked and that the scale was what I needed and wanted.

Step 3 Construction

After cutting the pattern, I took all the pieces, including the female, male, and hybrid parts, to create a pattern and make a shirt design I am still developing.

Lazer Cuttting Settings

Red Line- for Cut power:52.00 / Speed 0.70 Blue- for shape Cut power 52.00/ speed 1.50 Green - Cut power 52.00/ Speed 3.00

When setting up the test to lazer cut make sure to take a memerment of the thinkness of the fabic its self to be able to know the excat demations of the setings.Always test a small square as well to make sure that it will go all the way through.

Messure out fabric then calculate how many can be fit inside of the fabric to be able to reduce the amount of scaps that are left over after lazer cutting.
