Process and workflow¶
Strated with my sketches and then took the idea into rhino and created the 3D mold on the CNC machien and learing how to properly set it up and use the equitment
Creating the mold for the CNC Milling machine¶
-
First, you must have a Rhino or 3D file ready and decide what bit to use and the measurements. In my case, I used sizes 10 and 6, which were the roundabouts.
-
Second add in two rectangles the same size as your artboard or surface area and set a bounding box that will appear as an orange transparent box around the mold. This will serve as the cutting area for the mold.
* Third, you have to set the settings for Horizontal Roughing on both the Negative and the positive side of the mold. The dimensions and settings might shift a bit, so double-check all of the settings. This will serve as the first pass to cut into the material.
* Fourth, set up the parallel cutting axis. The dimensions and settings might shift a bit, so double-check all of the settings. This will serve to cut down the rough edges and have a smooth surface.
* Fith, you set both the negative and positive sides of the mold, the Axis Profiling, which will be the last cut pass to refine and define the mold a bit more and not have such rough edges.
on the right hand side of the images you can see the difrance between the first Horizontal rough edging and the Parallel finishing.
* Six,set up the machien at the XYZ axis and make sure that the Z point is touching the sruface to ensure that the drill bit will go through in the material. Secure you board or what ever material with some screws into the CNC board.
After that you can use a saw to cut out the extra material and to seprate the two parts of the mold. Now you ready to set the leather or any other material into the mold.
The process of leather molding is simple, but once you have the mold, it can take some time to make.
STEPS
-
Soak the leather in cold water before hand for about 20 minutes to an hour.
-
Afterward, put it into a pot with warm water, not boiling water, for 4-5 minutes
-
Take it out carefully and set it on the mold or object you want it to be shaped in. Afterward, leave the mold for 48-72 hours to put the leather and ensure it gets all the details set into it.
Ingredients & Recipes¶
Based on the recipes that Petra Garajová had provided from previous recipes in FAB LAB, I took the appropriate ratios to create the recipes for the crystals that I wanted to make.
You created Borax and Alum crystals. The difference is that Alum can build upon previous crystals, while Borax is set once or cannot add on more once solution is set.
Previous Recipes¶
ALUM MIX¶
Ingridents
- Alum
- Clean beaker or jar
- Paper towel or cloth
- Alcohol
- Coffee Filter
- Heat Safe continer
Boil water in a safe container that has been cleaned with alcohol. Then, take the water and filter it with a coffee filter. Slowly start adding the solution to the water. Keep stirring while you do this so it does not begin to crystallize immediately.
STEPS¶
- Dissolve the alum rock, sufficient quantity until the solution is saturated (particles in the bottom without dissolving).
- Place the structure or element in which we want the crystals to grow suspended inside the container.
- Pour the solution inside using a paper filter. Once these steps have been completed, we must not touch the elements or the solution with our hands.
- Cover with a cloth and let the container rest.
- After you see that the cristals are no longer dissolving, you can place the item and let it sit for 12-72 hours, depending on the effect you are trying to get. You can add more by creating the same solution, just 50% of the original solution, and adding more crystals to the dissed effect.
- Remove from the liquid medium and allow to dry.
- To clean the container, just boil some water to help it dissolve and clean.
BORAX MIX¶
Ingridents
- Borax Powder
- Water
- Alcohol
- Coffee Filter
- Heat Safe continer
STEPS
Heat the water (enough to fill the container you will be using). It is not necessary to bring the water to a boil. cover to dissried sruface quantity until the solution is saturated (particles in the bottom without dissolving).
- Place the structure or element in which we want the crystals to grow suspended inside the container.
- Pour the water though the filter.
- Once these steps have been completed, we must not touch the elements or the solution with our hands.
- Mix solution until you see that the soultion is starting to from a base at the bottom and set iteam into the continer.
- Cover with a cloth and let the container rest. Can be with in 24-72 hours depending on the disired outcome.
RESULTS¶
The final result turend out well on the earings with the Alum oslution I did put a little bit of food colorant into the mixture but it need a bit more to create a saturated color. Aside from that happy with the results.
