Process/ Rearch

List of Process for Project Ideation

  • Create samples smaller 10x10 inch 7-10 variations to see what would work
  • Get feed back on the materials/ iterate material recipes
  • Gather material from local salons and baber shops this took 2-3 weeks to get enough of the material
  • Gather other material supply’s that was in the mix the coco fiber, canela, ash, hair, shampoo, gloves.
  • Make more samples put them into the molds and ideate what recipe would work best
  • Work on 3D molds and print them for testing samples
  • Worked on 3D and Grasshopper to ideate the mold Desing that I wanted to create with the shape.
  • Create the hair by sorting it by death and cling up the debrie and washing/ drying the hair
  • Put together cork bards to CNC
  • CNC cork mold
  • Take pictures of samples/ edit and put look book together
  • Stroy board and script/ get it approved and input
  • Ideate viedo shots and set location and connate dates and times
  • Edit viedo and put together with music that was royalty free
  • Create catalog of materials with recipes
  • Put together presentation for digital and physical

Gather Matterial form local salons and baber shops around the school as well as otheres with in the city.

Started by sorting the little pieces of trash from the hair by longs and shorts. Afterward, we washed the hair and let it dry out to make sure all the dirt and other debris were removed. Later, we mixed the binder solution and added the hair to the mix, laying it with the molds and also layering different materials together in various methods.

Very important to sort the hair and the debire from the hair that might be in it.Firt there has to be a layer of longer hair 3inches or more and layed all over for the first pass the second and third layer you add in shorts and another layer of longer haris to be able to have the set mat of hair.

Worked with Itzel Sanclemente and Matter of Trust to use this felting machine to be able to work with some of the layering and process of the hair felting.

Mold Ideation

Worked with grasshoper and rhino to be able to create and ideat the mold that I later used the CNC machine to cut out in a plack of coark. I used coark becasue its a more eco friedly material and porours to be able to dry in a better way for the material mix I had set it in but I did add in a layer of cocunut oil to the mold before seting the material into the mold so it would not stick to the mold and come out easly.

Cocept 2

Creating Bio based Matrial that can be used to sound proof and replace the other non bio material or have it as a better alternative in the market.

As well as potentially creating more products out of hair and binding it with bio material to be able to repuse the hair in some form even be able to use pet hair potentially to also create products out of them and reduce the use of raw materials that need to be extracted.

How can we take this natrual fibre and reource and be able to repoupose it into something more?

WHY THIS MATTERS

Acoustic Panels: Often combine foam, fabric, and other sound-absorbing materials.

The most popular or cruel products on the market are made of polyurethane, melamine, and fiberglass. Polyurethane can take up to 50 to 1,000 years to break down in the environment. It is made of melamine, which their studies haven't found in the exact number of years, but it can last hundreds in landfills due to its durability and materials like fiberglass.

There are other eco-friendly cutlery alternatives like: Cork, Mineral Wool, Cotton/ cellulose and Mycelium. But none that are looking into natural fibre like hair that is also a material that is often discarded and have an excess of and can repurpose to give it a second life.

Prototypes

First experimantatio with the material and lef them for 5 days to dry out.

SOUND TESTING

Worked with a local university in Barcelona to test out the sound frequency and bounce that the materials have to be able to compare and ensure that the numbers and theory would work, and the test resulted in positive feedback. The hair felt itself reacted very similarly to the traditional foam material that is used in the current market.
