13. Implications and applications

Research & Concept

For my final project, I start from the concept of "becoming animal" by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari in their work “Mil Mecetas”. This concept proposes adopting a way of life not limited by traditional human frameworks, seeking new ways to experience and perceive the world. It is about going beyond conventional boundaries and exploring other forms of being and feeling, questioning the established structures of identity and perception. What I propose based on this is a contradiction: "becoming a domesticated animal." This suggests that the desire for freedom and connection with the wild ends up being controlled by systems of power and artificial realities

Social media is the prime example of this, as it shapes our desires and actions while pretending to offer us freedom and self-expression, through algorithms that promote surveillance, consumption, and addiction.

I want to develop a device that functions as an interactive body harness linked to social media. The idea is that each notification would activate a sensor to progressively inflate the harness. At first, this would generate a sensation of pleasure, but as more notifications accumulate, the inflation would reach a point where the experience becomes overwhelming and uncomfortable, symbolizing the transition from pleasure to suffocation that can arise from the excessive use and dependence on social media.

MATERIALS

Silicon, or fabric for soft robotics necklace and harnes.

Some pieces in 3d printer

Vacuum pump motor

Wifi arduino

Plastic tube

Straps for the arnes

And more to research.

Why, What, Who, When, Where?

This project and research is a wearable and performative artwork, whose main idea is to represent the relationship between humans and social media. Through the body and technology, it stages the constant desire for digital immortality, revealing how identity is built based on the gaze of others and the algorithm. The piece acts as an extension of the body that reacts to the digital environment, questioning the need for validation and permanent presence in the virtual world.
