13. Implications and applications

Week 13 was abite challenging week as we had to start brainstorming innovative and creative ideas for our final project in Fabricademy. One of the main reasons for attending Fabricademy is to push the boundaries of the fashion industry by introducing new techniques and materials to create culturally inspired products, utilizing available resources and innovative processes.

Research & Concept

My project will be engaging in textile scaffolding in the context of leather molding, a mold created, and the leather is shaped and formed over it. coming out with the idea of the kind of prototype i will produce, my mind goes to Rwandan cultural artifacts. i got inspired IGISABO, the traditional Rwandan cultural artifact, a type of gourd used to churn milk and extract butter.

Historically, the Igisabo was an essential tool for Rwandan households, especially those in rural areas. It was used by women, who would rhythmically churn milk within the gourd, a process that was both functional and meditative.

The Inspiration and Concept

Inspired by the beauty and cultural significance of the Igisabo, this project aims to reinterpret this traditional artifact into a contemporary fashion accessory: a leather Igisabo bag. By employing the innovative technique of leather molding, we can capture the essence of the Igisabo's form while infusing it with modern design aesthetics.

The Message Behind the Bag

The Igisabo leather bag is more than just a fashion accessory; it is a statement piece that celebrates Rwandan culture and heritage. By carrying this bag, individuals can express their connection to their roots, their appreciation for traditional craftsmanship.
