Welcome to my page¶
This is me
Hi! I'm Alessia, an Italian visual artist now based in the Netherlands. This space will document my journey at the Fabricademy in Amsterdam, together with ideas, projects and mistakes.
My Background¶
I was born in Italy in 1999 and grew up in a small village surrounded by hills. Much of my childhood was spent taking long walks in nature, collecting herbs and plants with my mother, and climbing trees. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Verona, I spent a few months in Iceland working as an assistant to a visual artist. Around that time, I was accepted into a Master’s program in the Netherlands, where I am writing from today. Moving here three years ago to pursue a Master’s in Visual Arts and Post-Contemporary Practices, I began questioning my own practice. After so many years of painting, I felt like it became more a mannerism than a form of expression. Nevertheless, I always carry a profound connection to the liquid state of painting, viewing it as a methodology for embracing fluidity, movement, and adaptation. During my Master's years I also discovered the world of Bio Art and Bio Design and I had the opportunity to access a biolab and work with amazing artists and tutors.
My Research¶
My practice explores the intersection of intimate experience, embodied intuition, and collective memory. I’m interested in cultural and familial legacies, as well as traditional stories and myths that shape our sense of identity. I approach this aspect using various media such as painting, installation and participatory practices. Over time, my personal experience has carried me further and further from the Mediterranean, creating distance from its cultural landscape and family trauma. This distance brought me to question what has shaped my identity and to look back at the stories and legends that characterised my family's place of origin and the region where I grew up.
I'm also co-founder of Crow Stitch Collective an artist collective woven together by care, resistance, and liberation. Guided by a feminist approach, we came together with the desire to nurture a creative ecosystem that blossoms with collaboration, exchange, fluidity, and a shared vision.
