Global Interactive Garden: Moving Mobile with Sculptural Forms

**5 Ws: ** who, what, when, where, why

how is what you will start defining in your process pages

who

I will work in collaboration with students and potentially through workshops, which I will be schedule depending on how prototyping goes.

what

A moveable dress that includes one or more mobiles. The lower half will include pneumatics to create movement, indicating a water environment and/or octopi tenacles. The upper half will be comprised of dimensional mobiles inspired by the work of Alexander Calder. Ideally, electronics will light-up various elements. The entire sculpture will be inspired by and create an ecosystem that echoes living creatures including fish, plants, and bugs. Whenever possible, the components will be made from upcycled materials.

when

My first workshops to make 4-5 protypes samples will take place on two consecutive Saturdays, February 1 and 8.

where

The first prototype installation will be at the end of my three-week Saturday workshop series. The prototypes will be on display on Vanderbilt's Peabody campus for parents to see when they come to pick-up their children. It will be helpful to get feedback from people at this event.

why

My vision for the rest of my career is to work on collective art pieces with multiple purposes:
1) Teach people of all ages abut the circular economy. We all need to ask and think: What if everything was made for reuse/recylce/upcycle? What if we didn't think about living disposable lives and realities anymore? How can art help us to see differently? How can we reuse items in making art that teach life lessons and inspire people of all ages to be better stewards of our planet?
2) Give people of all ages, mostly young people, ways to engage with their hands to give them relief from technological devices.

Shapes

The project design focus will be on circles. Circles represent:
The circular economy

Definition of circles from Brain Wise Mind website linked here
1) "Symbol of Unity and Wholeness: Circles represent interconnectedness and continuity, symbolizing infinite cycles with no beginning or end, reflected in relationships through wedding rings.
2) Spiritual and Cultural Significance: In many religions and cultures, circles embody spirituality, representing the universe and sacred connections, as seen in practices like mandalas and communal rituals.
3) Nature’s Cycles: Circles illustrate natural patterns and cycles, such as seasons and life processes, emphasizing the continual flow and rhythm of existence.
4) Artistic and Psychological Aspects: In art and design, circles evoke feelings of balance and harmony, while psychologically, they provide a sense of safety and comfort, particularly in healing environments.
5) Historical Contexts: Across ancient and modern cultures, circles maintain their symbolism, representing sacred principles, community, and the cycles of life that resonate through time.

Inspiration

Below: Alexander Calder, this installation embodies the balance and dynamism of working with opposites represented by the intersection of organic and inorganic. I love the dinosaur creature shape mixed with bold colors!

fish fish

Fish is an artwork by Alexander Calder, created in 1944, which is representative of the Kinetic Art movement. This particular piece falls into the genres of sculpture and mobile, showcasing Calder’s innovative approach to creating art pieces that incorporate movement.

The image shows a sculpture that resembles a stylized fish. The body of the fish is comprised of various colorful shapes that seem to mimic the scales, with a palette that includes red, white, blue, yellow, and green, among other colors. The outlines are in a bold red, defining the contour of the fish. These shapes are arranged within a wireframe, giving the impression of stained glass. Off to the left, there is a triangular element with a spiral design, perhaps representing the fish’s fin, and adding a sense of dynamic movement to the piece. The sculpture is designed to be suspended, allowing it to move with the air currents, making it a true “mobile” as Calder envisioned. The artwork’s playful composition, use of color, and incorporation of motion are characteristic of Calder’s work and the Kinetic Art movement he helped to pioneer. "

## Useful Websites, to Learn and Teach From
Children's Video on Alexander Calder and the basic definiton of mobiles, titled "Alexander Calder Organic Shapes Mobile Narrated Digital Storybook for Kids"

Excellent, very informative short video. Calder as artsit, inventor, and sculptor, the narrator discusses how he occupied many roles in his making, bridging the gap between organic and stylzed representations. Balances form in perfect equalibrium. Kenetic possibilities. Alexander Calder: The Artist as Inventor
