2. Digital bodies

The chastity of the nude ↗ - Kahil Gibran

“The chastity of the nude,” because the body, enclosing within itself beauty and freedom, is the truest and noblest symbol of life itself.

describe what you see in this image

For Gibran, art is “a step from nature toward the Infinite,” a bridge between matter and spirit. His ethereal nudes show beauty as life itself, a way and a guide to the divine. Moving between East and West, vision and tradition, he dissolves boundaries and surpasses schools.

In exploring digital bodies, I’m drawn to this same search for the human beyond the physical, weightless, dreamlike forms that live both in flesh and code. Gibran’s figures hover between worlds; so too do our digital selves, carrying echoes of beauty, identity and spirit into new, untethered spaces.

Process and workflow

3D scan

3d scan

me tajah

The Setup: Install CR Scan software Connect scanner via USB-C Calibrate following on-screen prompts Position object in well-lit area with matte background

Scanning Process: Choose mode: Turntable (small objects) or Handheld (large objects) Set resolution: Low Start scan - move slowly around object or use auto-rotate Cover all angles until complete 360° coverage

Post-Processing: Repair holes using fill tools Remove background with crop tool Smooth surfaces and check mesh integrity Export as OBJ (3D printing) or Stl

Pro Tips: Use scanning spray for reflective surfaces Keep scanner 40-60cm from object Scan complex objects in sections Save frequently during process

Then, I uploaded it to sketch fab to get a 3D video of myself. Scan of myself 1

Workflow

workflowIsobel Jo Leonard ↗ is a past student of the fabricademy, whose workflow I really admired for this week.

Make Human

I first played around with the settings on Make Human, making an elegant female with a dynamic pose, making the torso the focal point.

After obtaining my desired model, I then exported it as an .stl file to open it on Rhino.

Rhino

Rhino tutorial ↗

rhino

The first step was to get a mouse.
This was my first time using Rhino, so at first it was a little intimating, but after playing around with it for the afternoon, it began to be more manageable.

My 3D scan

After, I uploaded it to Rhino, where I needed to make it neat so I used the Boolean split and create a panel to cut off at the shoulders.

Make sure it is closed, and then export it as an OBJ or STL file to import into 3D sketch face.

Now I needed to remove any green that was taken from the green backdrop. RemovePerVertexColors Then to strip the material/texture (That’s: minus Properties, Object, Material = None)

Fill holes and repair mesh property

rhino

I kept having the issue of my file being greater than 100MB, so I reduced the faces again.

To create the torso:

  1. Import the file from MakeHuman to Rhino, making sure it's a .stl.
    rhino2
  2. Use the 4 panel square
  3. Create a square from the top view, making sure to cover the whole mannequin.

4. Copy the square, putting it under the waist and above the shoulders. 5. Now we want to cut these pieces, so go to MESH and scroll down to Boolean, Boolean Split. 6. Then click the object to cut and the cutting object.

Importat notes - Making sure the mesh is closed. If not go to mesh, repair mesh, fill all holes.

The final torso on rhino.

Slicer

When I was finished with my file in Rhino, I exported it to Slicer Fusion 360. There are many possibilities, however, I decided on Stacked Slices. NOTE - Add the material size + thickness and select. At this point to also decide the measurement of the slot offset. It is best to do a test first of the slots on the laser cutter.

Laser Cutting

notes

  • Laser cutting sheets 2
  • The laser cutter is a machine that must be used with caution. Make sure to be awake when using the Hankete, always have another person in the room while using the machine.
  • Make sure to check everything; always do a test.
  • Dimesnions are really important, so triple check!
  • Make sure dowels are a big enough diameter to put a stabiliser in, but not too big that it interferes with the sculpture.
