3. Circular Open Source Fashion

Research & Ideation

Ann Kyyrö Quinn has created luxurious bespoke handmade acoustic elements for domestic and commercial spaces. Her work is not a recycled design, nor is her business circular; however, I could imagine this kind of design could be both recycled and circular.

My drawings

I like geometric design, represented by many graphic designers who can be classified as part of the Swiss International Style, such as Joseph Müller-Brockmann.

The poster below is his most decisive work done for the Zurich Town Hall as poster advertisements for its theater productions.

My challenge is to combine geometric design with a plant system by analyzing the structural elements of both and identifying ways to integrate geometric shapes from the Swiss International Style into organic plant forms. I will explore this by mapping plant growth patterns and overlaying geometric frameworks to create new visual languages: Geometry to organic plants.

The result!

After 2 productions in felt and in leather, here is the result.

Design on Illustrator

I wanted to create and multiply curves with only 3 pieces.

I cut a 20 cm circle in a 2,5 cm thick.

I use Pathfinder to select only one quarter. I obtain 3 arcs of circles and a quarter of a circle.

In Illustrator, I use transparency to visualise the system.

I chose a single connection with a width of 1 cm.

I tried to connect arcs in the background. I tried many options. I chose to keep a single connection in the middle.

Conception, geometry to organic plants

FELT… too soft

We could use a piece of fabric or felt. I believe felt may offer enough rigidity to maintain the shade.

After completing the nesting in Illustrator, I optimized the surface area without any material waste.

Few set up

I cut 3 colors of felt; it’s very easy and fast. (S20 - P37) The laser lift moves the parts. So I created a layer with the notches and another with the shapes to limit the inconvenience. Ultimately, the result lacks the necessary firmness, and the single connection is ineffective. This outcome is disappointing.

My cat investigated the prototype by repeatedly sniffing the flowers. While the scent is strong, it is not pleasant.

What I recommend:

  • it’s easy to create curves.

  • Using soft fabric is a good solution for creating figure-flattering flowers and leaves.

  • Mixing fabrics is a good idea for incorporating leather.

Leather, a more suitable material

Fire tested

After the first disappointing assembly, I chose to work with a large leather scrap I had kept in my basement for the ears.

Hopefully, tested with fire and copper, the natural leather is usable for laser cutting.

Double connections

It works well, but I had to add the thickness of the leather by adding 1 mm on each side.

I tried to find solutions to connect arcs : above or below. I prefer the assembly below for a simpler look.

I use a very useful clamp to thread the male connection through the female connection.

Nesting

It’s very simple to multiply the pattern with almost no loss.

This model 1 was obtained by using illustrator.

The laser cut nesting 2 was created using Beam studio.

Assembly

With the help of my clamp, I was able to create a wall assembly and a round assembly. The petals are made of red felt, and the leaves are made of light green fabric. These two elements can be placed in single, double, or even triple to create volume.

Go further...

After all those prototypes, I could develop my project into bigger projects: 1. Create a jacquet with a spin in the back and all pendants pieces 2. An accoustic wall
