11. Open Source Hardware - From Fibers to Fabric¶
Research & Ideation¶
This week we focused on hacking a tufting gun into a felting gun. Claire has been working with wool for the past years and has noticed that wool leftovers cannot be turned into yarn. However, they can be used for felting.
What is tufting ?¶
There is Studio Paresse that made this lovely brushed design.

It is made with a single needle tufting gun.
I had never done it before so we tried with my dear classmates Annabel and Claire.
What is felting ?¶

Tools¶
Tufting Gun Laser printer
Materials¶
| Qty | Description | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | PVC sheet | 7.00 € |
| 1 | Cardboard | 2.00 € |
| 10 | Screws | 2.00 € |
| 4 | Butterfly closure | 1.00 € |
Process¶
Claire focused on 3D making the display and I made it in 2D. This way we had different ways of hacking the machine.
1- Unmount the scissor of the tufting gun
2- Measure the space where it will be possible to add components.
3- There is a hole in the needdle of the tufting gun. Use it as a secure point to fixate new device.
4- The felting device needs to hold several needles. Here under you can see all the parts that I laser cut1.
Results¶
Once assembled, the entire felting device was tilted therefore we went back to traditional felting method to redesign.
