1. State of the art, project management and documentation¶
Research & Ideation¶
Something that makes me feel intrigued is for sure nature. I discovered the dyeing properties of plants during my class on natural dyeing during my Masters. It openned a door tat I cannot wait to practice again during the Fabricademy classes. Picture top right is from Precious Peels, a designer based in Brussels who uses aubergine peels to make prints.
A textile aesthetic that inspires me is Stockolm-based Rave Review brand. They use textile know-how in oder to upcycle. It's one of the finest brands of upcycling to my eyes. Picture of 2 mannequins on bottom left and bottom right are from the website of Rave Review.
The is one independant magazine called "CENSORED" that curates topics such as feminism, ecology, war, racism, classism, etc... that has found ways to make political engagement sexy and art needed. I love their graphic designs and layout. Both pictures in the middle are from the website of CENSORED.
I like the aesthetic of showing know how in a discipline by showing something that could be broken or odd but is not. It's the essence of upcycling. The dog print is a screenshot of a video on Instagram and the chairs are from an artist in Marseille who made those chairs for the runway of Jean Paul Gaulthier.
Motivation for Textile Academy¶
I miss exploring fashion sustainability. To me, studying concrete innovative processes thanks to technology and bioloogy is urgent in order to give new directions to the capitalist fashion industry. I already LOVE two new words I learnt during Week 1 : symbiocene glocal
Questions I'd like to find an answer to are the following:
philosophical
how to reconnect with technology in a more caring way?
technical
how to develop clothes from a value-driven perspective?
is it possible to make a compostable and transparent resin?
what are transparent matters that I can create that last in time?
Documentation workflow¶
In order to start the course well, I first need to buy a computer because my gear is not compatible with software that we need to use. I have a tablet and a iMac from 2012 that does not run the latest OS.
Criteria are the following :
RAM : more than 32GB
Processor : higher than 3 gHz
SSD : at least 1To
Big question, staying at Apple or slowly transitionning to Linux/Windows ?
After asking my friends who work in 3D, reading articles and working with my budget of 500 euros, that left me no choice than to buy second hand.
Possibilities were :
Asus Pro Art - too expensive even second hand
Lenovo Legion
Asus Rog
or or or
Macbook pro from 2020
but I found a lenovo for the same price of a MacBook with more power. Welcoming this new member of my electronics collection on Friday 26thof September.
Welcome to the family Lenovo ThinkPad L14 G2 14" Core i7 4.8 GHz - SSD 1 To - 32 Go, I hope you will live long <3¶
I use Notion to take notes and organise my various projects.
Here are the notes I took: - image libraries : unsplash, pixels, etc… / always reference! - compress photos - remove background from pictures https://www.remove.bg/
embedding = copy/paste code
- Heyzine - app that helps paste a pdf embedded
- embedd a zip folder for vector files so that it's smaller in size / online sketchfab or p3d.in
- prefer horizontal format when taking pictures/video (to upload on YouTube)
- cap cut to edit videos
I chose the font Cutive Mono on Google fonts. I like the retro and serious balance of it because I know I will have very expressive and vivid pictures throughout my projects.
