Concept | RECODED TATREEZ¶
The Story or the Message
This concept explores the profound relationship between heritage and technology as extensions of one another across time. Just as hands preserved the memory of society with thread and needle, technology today reshapes this memory through new media. Heritage is not presented as a static element of the past, but as a living entity capable of reinterpretation, transformation, and continuity, where the body becomes a space upon which stories are carried and rewritten in a contemporary language.
The Relationship Between Heritage and Technology
Here, technology is not the antithesis of heritage, but rather a tool for its sustainability. Through digitization, modeling, and 3D printing, embroidery and traditional dress are transformed from a material relic threatened with extinction into a system that can be documented, deconstructed, and reshaped. It is a relationship of integration: heritage provides technology with meaning, and technology grants heritage a new time.
The Body as a Bearer of Material Memory
The body is the primary archive. Through clothing, texture, and weight, memory is transmitted from generation to generation without words. The body becomes a platform bearing symbols, threads, and traces, transforming clothing from a covering into a document, from adornment into a tangible witness to history, identity, and belonging.
Mood/Emotions of the project¶
Contemplative, profound, calm yet powerful.
A sense of reverence, continuity, and connection to roots, with a subtle tension between past and future, suggesting transformation rather than rupture.
Why is this concept important today?¶
In an era of digital acceleration and collective amnesia, preserving heritage becomes a matter of existence, not nostalgia. This concept raises the question: How do we carry our history without imprisoning it in the past? By integrating heritage with technology, we create a contemporary language that safeguards identity, enables new generations to connect with it, and grants Palestinian memory space to survive, see, and evolve in a rapidly changing world.
RECODED TATREEZ PROJECT¶
RECODED TATREEZ will present a collection of 3 thobes with the head piece & belts telling the story of palestine via Tatreez patterns that differs from one thobs to other.
The main concept of RECODED TATREEZ project¶
This project delves into the study of ancient patterns dating back to pre-Nakba dresses, repurposing them within contemporary pieces. Its aim is to revive and reintroduce these motifs and symbols, grounding them in the knowledge and context of our heritage. It treats these patterns not merely as aesthetic elements, but as carriers of memory and history.
This project creates entirely new patterns inspired by Palestinian nature: trees, flowers, landscapes, and the details of old houses and stones. Through these elements, I tell my own story and add a new narrative to the history of the Palestinian dress for the future. This work stems from a belief in the importance of preserving heritage; our present is the past and heritage of future generations, and what we create today will shape tomorrow's memory.
This work also represents an attempt to document the events and suffering endured by this people during their long struggle to reclaim their rights and land. Here, the dress becomes a visual and physical witness to memory, bearing the marks of pain, resilience, and hope, transforming suffering into woven symbols that preserve the narrative and prevent its erasure.
