6. Computational Couture¶
Research & Ideation¶
"Computational couture explores the intersection between fashion design and digital fabrication, focusing on parametric modeling, algorithmic design, and customization of garments through 3D and computational tools. This week’s goal was to experiment with digital body modeling, parametric design workflows, and 3D printing or laser cutting to create garments that merge technology and fashion."
Research Concept¶
I explored how computational design can change the way we produce and personalize clothing. Using digital tools Blender, I analyzed how forms can respond to the human body’s geometry, structure, and movement. Inspirations included designers like Iris Van Herpen, Francis Bitonti Studio, and Julia Körner.

Tools¶
Blender: Used for visualization, rendering, and form exploration.
Process and workflow¶
Step 1: Body Model Generation
I used MakeHuman to create a realistic 3D human model, exported it as an .obj file, and imported it into Blender.
Step 2: Base Mesh and Sculpting
In Blender, I created the garment’s base shape using mesh modeling tools and sculpt mode to refine the body form.
Step 3: Modifier Workflow
Applied Blender’s modifiers such as Mirror, Solidify, and Subdivision Surface to refine the garment structure and symmetry. • Step 4: Fabric Simulation Used Blender’s Cloth Simulation to test how fabric would behave on the digital model, adjusting material weight, stiffness, and collision parameters.
Step 5:Rendering and Visualization
Used Blender’s Eevee and Cycles render engines to produce realistic visuals of the final model with lighting and textures.
