The body is a sculpture: It's constantly in motion, yet every frame of the movement is a unique sculpture in itself. To create a sculpture of the body is not just about capturing a body posture; it's more about capturing the energy and recreating the emotions/sensations at that specific moment. Observing sculptures by Rodin and Bernini, you'll notice that a seemingly static representation of the body can still be full of tension, and you can almost feel it through your own skin. Encased is a collection of body shaped leather luggage that seeks to freeze a moment of the body while still maintaining the energy and sensations at that moment.
References & Inspiration¶
I began my research by studying sculptures and visual references related to Rwandan traditional dance, focusing on expressive gestures and symbolic postures that convey cultural rhythm and storytelling. To deepen this exploration, I expanded my study to include body sculptures and portrait photography, selecting images based on two main criteria: the aesthetic qualities of the body’s anatomy and the presence of tension, emotion, and sensation within the pose. I was particularly interested in images where posture communicates energy and balance, creating harmony between the physical form and the emotional context. Rather than seeking a literal depiction of the body, my goal was to identify references that convey movement and expression while maintaining a sense of sensuality, presence, and narrative through form alone.

MOLD DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING¶
I started by selecting images of Rwandan traditional dance postures that exemplified both architectural elegance and expressive tension. Using the online tool MakerLab Image to 3D, I converted a 2D image into a 3D mesh and subsequently downloaded the STL file. This file was imported into Blender, where I refined the model to prepare it for mold creation, effectively translating photographic inspiration into a tangible 3D form suitable for leather molding.
