Interesting projects¶
Mu Boyan
Mu Boyan is a contemporary Chinese sculptor. Best known for his variety of small-scale and life-sized depictions of obese young men suspended in various activities or poses, the underlying focus of his work is the transforming views of weight gain in China. Where obesity was once seen as a sign of wealth in a country where many people were starving, popular views are now shifting towards the Western perception of the overweight as grotesque and unhealthy. Mu’s work examines this change of view through his humorous and satirical sculptures, which, despite their exaggerated surrealism, maintain a high degree of realism and technical finish. Born in 1976 in Shandong Province, China, he went on to receive a master’s degree in fine art from the sculpture department of the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2005. Mu lives and works in Beijing, China.
‘Fat is fat, but there are two ways of looking at it. While an excess of adipose tissue may be unattractive to Westerners, in the East, it’s a sign of decadent wealth. After all, only people who can afford to be fat are those who can afford to eat more food than they absolutely have to.’
