3. Circular fashion

Week 3.

*Illustration Inspired in Open Source Fashion Manifiesto by Martijn Van Strien

This week we had to build and explore shape with just a module. Frankly, it was not an easy task, buuuut Fabricademy is all about this... so I tried to play the game once again :). I will go through my process relating it to the 7 main principles of Open Source Fashion Manifiesto . This way I will probably be more concious about its proclamation now, and in the future.

1.

"We want clothes that tell us their story: How they were made, where, by whom, and from which materials".

That been said, I will explain bellow the origin and process I went through to get to my "O-O Necklace" so anyone can get colser to it.

As usual, I couldnt decide on what to inspire: I did not know if it was a better plan to go organic or geometric. So, as you will see, I finally merged both: my module ended up beeing a circle + a ractangle.

2.

I tried to focus on getting a flexible module, over getting a Zero waste one. I was looking for a module that offered me diferent possibilities. I am a big fan of Craft of Use project led by Kate Fletcher:

"What if we pay attention to tending and wearing garments? What if we favour their use as much as their creation?"

Local Wisdom website, collects and tags the different practices spotted by the Research Team since 2009. One of the practices is named "Open and Adjust":

"Garments can be reworked to meet changing needs. The knowledge and skills to open up a garment and adjust it to fit enrich and embolden society. They remind us about ingenuity and resourceful possibility and help replace consumption with action."

Consequently, I believe that if a garment can evolve with the person, its life may be extended

These are pictures of my process, which was by moments, frustrating.

I tried with some geometric shapes but they all seemed to be too rigid for what I was looking for, and then, the opposite happened with the organic ones. This was the final outcome.

The length of the rectangle can vary, but it actually works only with one length.

3.

"Modern production techniques can re-use the materials of which our clothing is made in many different applications"

I did not use an eco friendly material, but I am happy to say that I did not buy new fabrics for the assignment. I decided to recycle some leather that I had from a previous project, and that was "resting" for the last 5 years. Laser cutting this material, allowed me to give it a second chance. This is the color palette I selected... ...and the leather beeing cut.

(by the way, the yellow leather did not work very well. With a lower power it did not cut, and with I higher one, burned the surface)

4.

"The designer of the future works with all these new technologies in an open-source community. Instead of receiving ready-made garments, prosumers are provided with the needed frameworks and tools to produce them"

I decided to show the module in this Necklace, but of course, this is just one possibility, as the module enable infinite ways.

The "O-O Necklace" can be done with Leather 1 + Leather 3, which takes:

- 15 modules A (small)
- 4 modules B (medium)
- 2 modules C (large)
- 1 circle (just adding the circle to play, but is not necessarily part of the dessign)

I am used to CorelDraw for Vectorial Illustration, but after watching Anastasia´s tutorial on Rhinoceros, I decided to give it a try. I found it extremely practical and useful, much more than Corel which is also really unstable, and also won´t work on Mac. Unfortunatelly is not OS (Corel isn´t also).

5.

"What if you could have the ability to create a garment for yourself?. All of our garments will be unique"

The module is quite rich, as it offers a wide range of possible configurations to build garments or accesories.

  1. One inside the other
  2. Both inside the other
  3. Conecting group of modules
  4. In chain mode
  5. In basketwork mode
  6. Three modlues making one

This enables to create, modify and explore. Here just some more playing:

6. and 7.

These does not need to be explained! Just downoald and own it, is yours too.
