9. Textile as scaffold¶
Textiles can be used for endless purposes, and this week we went wild with a lot of crazy techniques! 🤪
This week we worked together again and therefore had the opportunity to test different techniques. First of all we started with something very attractive to the eye!
CRYSTALS¶
Ideas we had before starting: Crystals on wool amd dried food waste.
CNC MILLED MOLDS¶
- DESIGNING THE MOLD a. Positive CNC mold
After the Rhinoceros and RhinoCam tutorials (https://vimeo.com/480900192)
Tobia: I was thinking about some cool shapes and inspirations.
When it came up the idea was to make a mold for gloves. Disposable gloves. Bio Compostable disposable gloves. So I made a hand mold!

TOOLS on RHINO CAM
HORIZONTAL ROUGHING | Tool: Flat_Mill_10mm |
PARALLEL FINISHING | Tool: Ball_Mill_8mm |
FORMULA to calculate the speed of the tool
Feed rate = rpm (of the spindle) * # flute * chip load (of the material)
SPEED = RPM (18.000) * 1 FLUTE * 0,5 (CALCULATE FOR PLYWOOD) = 9000
LEATHER COMPOSITE on HAND MOLD | MAKING PROCESS
COMPOSITES¶
We learned about different types of composites, such as In the future we would like to do some concrete casting too into
Materials Bio Resin and Epoxy Resin Borax, Rochelle salt, Potassium sodium, Epsom Salt, Sugar, Concrete and Plaster Veneer/Plywood Fabric White Glue Vacuum bags or vacuum machine
Wood Composite¶
Furthermore with the help of Josep Martí, our beloved mentor, we take the chance to try with a wood composite. It was a pretty fast and easy process: Design the shape on a Vectorial Software as Rhino, Illustrator, Inkscape; Choose the Wood Material ( Plywood in this case); Choose a fabric to create the composite; Lasercut the shape on the chosen material; Use white glue or vinyl glue ( or a bioglue) to paste the wooden shape on the chosen fabric; Press the composite to let the glue join the parts; Let it dry; ENJOY! :D
