4. Biochromes

This summer at the Bootcamp that I did with fabricademy we could see the work of FLOR VERÓN GOAS with her brand WÜL, a great dyeing artist who was quite revealing and didactic workshop since we were able to realize that he was around us, we went for a walk around the surroundings of the BasqueDesignCenter and as we progressed, she explained to us the best way to identify the best plants and how to collect them without damaging the environment since we have to take into account the speed of growth of the plants since some have a lot of ink if it takes a long time grow we could cause a great impact on the ecosystem.

We learned to bite with various techniques and to stain with various others, We also visited his workshop where we could see many ways and in addition to various dyeing techniques and the best ways to be respectful with the raw material and the environment.

The Process

The mordant

A substance to combined with a dye bath to prepare the fibres. It improves the fastening process of organic fibres. They also have an impact on the final colour. Alum - helps brighten the colours and assures a good light and wash fastness. Copper - has a greater effect on vegetable fibres than animal ones. While saddening the colours, it brings out greens and blues. Iron - often used as a modifier instead as of a mordant. Helps to darken and saddening the colours.

We used ALUM as a mordant for our fabrics

The Ink Modifiers

The modifiers I used were vinegar and iron sulfate. When I took the original unmodified ink, I separated a few milliliters.

Specifically I took 10 ml when I took it and I put 3 drops for the vinegar, I used these amounts to make it easier to scale it, instead for the iron sulfate 15 ml I have put 2 drops.

In this way, I put those amounts on all the inks that I had and I was able to make the new inks and some very interesting colors came out.
