Inspiration & Ideation

The idea started when I saw the towel sleeve Leslie Stroz uses to clean her watercolor brushes when she sketches outside. When I used to make some urban sketches and I would go mad if I didn't have any pockets because I will have to open and close my bag everytime I needed a pencil or eraser. This is how the idea of an artist's tools sleeve began. I was inspired by Jeld's roll up leather pencil case, and I found a wrist pencil case online, too.

Process and workflow

I started ideating on my sketchbook, putting references and inspirations and sketching what I could desgin. I made paper prototypes then used Illustrator and Rhino to tesselate the pieces and cut them with the laser cutter on felt. I made three iterations but I still want to try more before I can say this is the final piece.

Iteration 01

I had taken a masterclass with Claudia about modular design a while ago and started putting my modules together to make something like a bracelette. This design is inspired by Islamic geometry and Indian motifs and domes. Although, my initial sketch didn't look good, when we laser cut the pieces they turned out nice. I actually designed one pice and the second was just the void between the pieces. But it turned out interesting I guess. And my favorite part was when we kept discovering new ways of putting the pieces together and coming up with different designs.

Iteration 02

I sketched several designs for the artist's sleeve. I started with a normal rectangle and two straps connected to it. Second, Claudia suggested it would be cool to turn the leftover space into a cover for the wearable pencil case. I then seperated the straps to reduce the design's area and waste. After that, I sketched some designs with thread and began considering smaller modules instead of the long rectangles.

I made a paper model and a quick laser cut felt prototype for the rectangular idea.

The paper prototype I made. I drew it op paper and cut it. And the felt prototype that was cut with the laser cutter.

Iteration 03

I wanted to make the wearble pencil case more artistic and magical. I built a little mood board that you can see below. Images are from unsplash, Intuitive Grometry, pinterest. I was really inspired by the bougainvillea flower, becuase it is a climbing plant, it is commonly found around Amman, and it has beautiful colors, one of them is white! I'm planning to have the final piece in white, or at least most of it, so when the artist can cleans his brush on it he will also color it. It will catch more and more colors with time and paintings. It will be like a color journal.

Moodboard

I wanted to try a more geomtric and abstract shape here. You can see the 3D shape of the bougainvillea flower emerge when the pieces are put together. I also like the pattern that is happening on the back.

This is the 2D pattern and tesselation I did on Rhino. At first I tried to cut the female piece from the middle but the lines were so close it tore easily, so I offset the line to the third of the distnance between the old line and the corner of the triangle.

It does look like a bougainvillea flower, right?

At last, I uploaded the tesselation file and some pictures to the Open Source Circular Fashion website.
