Research & Ideation

BODYWAVES is a body that comes from the inspiration of the movements of nature. I always thought that there was a close connection between man and nature in their forms. That's why I wanted to create my body made of waves of the sea or waves of hills, as you prefer.

WHAT ISPIRED ME:

WHY AM I ISPIRED BY THESE FORMS?

I have always loved the hills and all those shapes that remind me of them. Ever since I was little when I looked at them, they reminded me of home. In fact, I grew up halfway between Florence and the Val d'Orcia, a countryside area near Siena. They call it the desert of Italy, it remembers it in the summer when the grain is golden.Probably, for this reason, my love for these waves comes from my childhood.

My inspiration started from these forms. I think that there is a strong connection between our body and nature and I would like to keep these two elements connected. So, from this thought was born BODYWAVES.

MY PROJECT

How I made my body :

MAKE HUMAN and 3D SCANNER

In this week I learned how I can create a digital 3d body. We have 2 means for achieving a three-dimensional models, the first is the 3D SCANNER and the second is Makehuman, a software that allows you to model your shape through parameters.

  1. CAPTURE A 3D IMAGE

Thanks Bea for the 3d session!!

Here below you can find a gif where my classmate Marieke scans my body.

BUT, my scan didn't come out very well, so I created my digital body on MakeHuman.

  1. MAKE HUMAN

How I shaped my body on MakeHuman, through the steps below:

At first I shaped my body on MakeHuman, you can see the modeling steps above. You have Is so easy work on your body in MHuman, you can choose a lot of parameters for body, from the head to foot. You can choose also the pose, the software doesn't have too many interesting pose, but the most standart to start.

Here below you can find a model that I edited on sketchfab. You can use this application to create a more creative avatar. You can add colors, textures and light effects.

Here below my final model

RHYNO, 3d models

After modeling my body on MakeHuman I transferred my file to RHYNO, in order to make other more specific changes, such as cutting in my case.

How I cut my body on Rhyno? Here below you can find a video and some steps:

  • 1 Upload your file obj.
  • 2 Write on command BOX
  • 3 Make a selection of the parts that you want to cut
  • 4 Write on command Booleansplit
  • 5 Select your body and click enter
  • 6 Select the box and click enter
  • 7 delete the part that you want to cut

I had to make a curve in my shoulder, because the cut it wasn't follow my shape, if you want to make a curve follow these steps:

  • 1 Make a line as you want your curve
  • 2 Write on command Extrude
  • 3 Mesh/ Booleansplit
  • 4 select your body and click enter
  • 5 select the area that you want to cut and click enter
  • 6 delete the part

My body is ready for Slice fo fusion!

SLICE FOR FUSION

After modeling my 3D body on Rhyno, I have to convert my 3D model into 2D models so I can cut it with the laser machine.

In this software you have to prepare yor body for the laser machine. You can choose the modeling technique and all the parameters related to the thickness, size of your model and evaluate the positioning of your pieces.

  • 1 Upload your file obj.
  • 2 change Manufacturing settings Height:760 - Lenght 1160 - Thickness 3 mm
  • 3 My body must be lying on his right side, so at firt I rotate my body
  • 4 Put your size in Object size, my body is Height 10 - width 16 - Lenght 70 cm
  • 5 Select the technique : Stacked slice / round shape
  • 6 Export DXF file

My body is ready for the Laser Machine!

LASER MACHINE & LIGHT BURN

First of all thanks to Michelle who assisted me during the laser cut session.

At first Michelle told me that I had to delet these point, because otherwise I would get small holes in every part of my model, so it would take longer to cut something unless.

Here below the steps:

  • 1 Open your dxf in Illustrator
  • 2 Select the hole
  • 3 Scriptotherscript
  • 4 Select Inked
  • 5 Download
  • 6 Export DXF file

Now my model is ready to cut!

At first you need to open LIGHTBURN, the software connected to the laser machine. In this software you have to put all the parameters on the placement of your pieces, you can also create different layers so that you can have one layer only for the writings to be engraved and another layer for the pieces to be cut.

These are my DXF file ready to be cut:

In LBurn you have to choose the speed and the power of laser cut, here below my parameters:

  • 0 I have 3 different layers
  • 1 At first the WRITING: SPEED 100 / MAXPOWER 10 / MINPOWER 10
  • 2 CUTS PART : SPEED 65 / MAXPOWER 65 / MINPOWER 20
  • 3 ADD NEW LAYER : only for control your frame SPEED 180 / MAXPOWER 30 / MINPOWER 30
  • 4 Number passes : 1
  • 5 Control your job origin control
  • 6 Now you have to control the frame, put your cardboard inside the machine
  • 7 Control focus of the machine and the distance from your cardboard to the laser point
  • 8 Control your frame and when the laser follow the line of your cardboard we are ready to start
  • 9 now with the tape fix the cardboard at the base
  • 10 Delete the layer of the frame
  • 11 Close the machine and click START

How your cardboard must be before you start!!

Here below my cardboard cut:

At the end of my work, on the advice of Cecilia I decided to color the paper, so as to create an even more three-dimensional effect. So I used a white spray (without water) to finish my bodywave. So I used a white spray (no water) to finish my bodywaves
