7. Computational Couture

Research & Ideation

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the lecture this week, so I only worked on this assignment later and very quickly. But I hope you will find something interesting.

The world of chainmail has always fascinated me in clothing and accessories. In my past work experiences I have often worked on metallic chainmail for different brands. The effect is really beautiful but usually these knits are extremely heavy and difficult to wear. For this topic I decided to think of a different way of proposing a mesh for clothing or accessories that could simulate that effect and thus replace metal.

The aim was to find functional modules that would simulate mesh but make the 'fabric' mouldable and lightweight.

References & Inspiration

I recommend watching some PARAPRINT videos for some inspirations

if you are not too inspired and need some help, you can have a look at this site, where you can find many different files ready to be printed from your 3d print. For me, considering the short time I had to develop my wire mesh, it was useful.

At this Link you will find the page about the file I downloaded for my example, but at the following links you will find files similar to the one I wanted to make.

Tools

Process and workflow

STEP 1 : PRUSA SLICER

Once I had chosen my file, I downloaded it and imported it into Prusa Slicer

Here below my setting, when you have entered all your parameters you can click on process now, so that Prusa slicer can generate your GCODE for printing.

STEP 2 : 3D PRINTER MACHINE

  • 1) Transfer your file to an external memory stick and connect it to the machine

  • 2) Switch the machine on

  • 3) Choose your filament, I chose a filament that was metallic and multi-coloured

  • 4) Cut the tip of the filament 45 degrees

  • 5) You must preheat the machine before inserting the filament

  • 6) Clicking on preheat choose 215 degrees

  • 7) Click on load and gently insert the filament until you feel the filament lock

  • 8) Start the machine by clicking Load filament to let the colour that was previously used come out of the nozzle, when you see your colour come out the machine is ready.

  • 9) Your machine is ready click start!! Good Luck
