03. CIRCULAR OPEN SOURCE FASHION¶
REFERENCES & INSPIRATIONS¶
Love the concept of this business founded in 2017 by Juliana Garcia Bello.
Guided by the inspiring works of these Fabricademy students: Loes Bogers deep exploration in one direction and Beatriz Sandini has amazing tutorials to start.
Modular design¶
I liked the deceptive simplicity and aesthetic expression of this modular design by Anrealage, Autumn-Winter 2020 collection found on The Cutting Class website article. There is also the feeling when looking at the collection that it should be easy to make, which is not really the case.
Inspirations from the past¶
In my summers photo archives found these butterfly wings photographed with a gifted by friends physics digital microscope and wanted to try mimic the wings.
BUTTERFLY¶
Started experimenting with paper and looked for different directions of the connections. To make thirst prototypes I used scissors, pencil, and square marked paper because it helps to draw more precise patterns. Later I used colour paper and lasercutted the parts.
Then connections worked out, parts1 there lasercutted from the neoprene fabric. It took a while to construct the garment because the connections not always wanted to go 3D. To understand how to go 3D I looked at Loes Bogers repository, but ran out of time to make it happen.
MOSS¶
Tried different ways to nest the parts for lasercutting. Deepnest opensource software is realy easy to work with but this time I wanted zero waste cutting with complicated forms like mimicry of the moss4 and tried manualy draw and nest at the same time using Inkscape.
Also attempted to create the “moss” inspired by Lithuanian5 ethnographic patterns.
SQUASHY & RHINOCEROS¶
Followed this Beatriz Sandini Rhinoceros tutorial for dummies to make the design2|3 with Rhinoceros software which also allows to nest the design. Only the connection cuts adjusted manually as wanted them to be raised and squishy - for that Neoprene fabric was the best. Squashy is uploaded to Open Source Circular Fashion website.
