3. Circular Open Source Fashion¶
Research & Ideation¶
As every week, the class was very rich in examples and inspirations about the subject. It is quite hard to select few when the mind is opening itself.
I have been really impressed by this work of Matija Cop because the module created has size variations.

References & Inspiration¶
How human reproduce nature, pictures by me :
I follow this lady Birgitta Helmersson on instagram and been alot interested in those clothes using all the fabric and got no waste from sewing. Even if I'm a patchwork amateur -so this technique should not be questionning the leftovers- I'm also torned by the fact fabrics cost alot and it's better not to waste them.
I realised her small jacket three times in different sizes.
And flat leather bag on the left from Cuir en stock and right la Botte Guardiane:
Tools
- Hand designing
- 2D modelling Illustrator
- Laser cutting with Trotec
Important things first¶
Process and workflow¶
I started hand design forms with curves but I realized it would have been easier with a geometric one because of the question of the waste and how to minimize it. So, instead of trying to have least as possible waste and no space between two forms (I should have find the perfect imbrication like Escher and it was too long as I don't wanted geometric forms), I decided to put them in a way that the waste could be a part of the work too.
My inspiration was axed a lot on camouflage nettings, unfortunately it is military devices and I my aim was not to implicate in military stuff but I like the idea of using technologic aspects on purpose.
Anyway, it influenced a lot my first steps of work. But when you think the object seperately of its initial purpose, you have a fantastic object to develop. Adding the manufacturing constraints, I liked the idea that it can have layouts whitch will grow the project from 2D to 3D and not just find a way to cut a surface to make it become quite alive, but create a module that will become a new object by its assemblage.
This big inspiration led me to color choices and materials : I wanted materials that looked strong and resistant but also practical, like the paragliding fabric. First choice of color was more around shades of white, but touching the fabrics, I changed suede and felt for black scuba and white faux-leather. These two have huge flexibility and two different aspects from every side, so it gives more options when assembly.
Steps¶
- Module evolution from drawing then testing on paper
- Adjusting the curves
- Clean design on Illustrator
- Tests on trotec laser cut
- Flat assemblages
- 3D assemblages
On paper¶
Super fast on paper, settings are easy and already parametered in the computer. The cut is clean and I have been able to consider my modules very quickly.
On fabric¶
Freshly cutted on different fabrics:
Matter | Power | Speed | Other parameters |
Black skuba | 70 | 12 | don't touch |
White silimi-cuir | 95 | 25 | don't touch |
Project : soften the hardware¶
My armchair Pop-up from french brand Lafuma has its toile broken, so I considered the project of creating another one with my module now I have surfaces and angles.
Testing angles on my computer led me to the idea of a cover for it as we say in french "arrondir les angles".
Using the net created by cutting for camo computer and new landscapes.
Not very satisfying with the paragliding fabric. I assemblied modules without considering all the possibilities, which I discovered during the editing through every trials. Like in a video game when you unlock levels, I was gaining new possibilities of volumes and sculptures.

Postwork references¶
It was funny to see the references appearing while testing new things. From left to right : Infinite Gauntlet from the superheros comics universe, hand mannequin for jewelery, Sauron's hand with THE ring from the Lords of The Ring movie.
At the same time, realizing how my module looks like a stormtrooper helmet, or a ghost, or an octopus.
