11. Implications and applications¶
Overview¶
This week we started thinking and discussing our final projects that we will be working on for the last three months of the program.
Research & Concept¶
In our lectures and workshops we were split into groups based on our areas of interest and worked togehter to ask how might we change the current system we are currently operating under. I was placed in the fashion design group because I know I want to create garments/sneakers using bio materials.

Why, What, Who, When, Where?¶
The problem:¶
-
I like to make garments out of plastic, but because plastic is not functional for everyday wear on the body the pieces are usually are only good for one off photoshoots -- just for the look not for the function. AND plastic is literally the cancer of the earth. It doesn't ever go away, even if I want to make something for bold and beautiful just for the one-off look.
-
Our wear-it-once culture is extremeley problematic. Influenced by celebrities and instagram, people don't want to be seen repeating outfits. On average people only wear their clothes 7 times before they get rid of them. 92 million tonnes of textile waste in landfills, polluting streets, communities, and oceans in the global south.
What if...¶
...Instead of trying to compeletly shift away from wear-it-once culture...we try to work with and design for it in a way that can be regenerative for the earth?
- What if we created unique bio plastic textiles that were actually designed for minimal wear, like photoshoots or red carpet events, that could be dissolved in water after they were worn?
- What if the dissolved solution could feed your plants when thrown in your garden or clean water if thrown down the drain?
Project¶
I want to create three bio plastic garments that will be designed to be dissolved after wearing them: top, bottom, and sneakers. I want to partner with a celebrity / "influencer" in Spain to model the clothes and dissolved the clothes after the photoshoot. I want to experiment with all things bio: the color, the textures, the scents.
Moving forward I can see this expanding as a diy kit, where I design the garment patterns and give people the reciepe to create their one-off looks at home, and then after they can reuse the material or feed their plants.
