3. Circular Open Source Fashion¶
Research & Ideation¶
"There is no beauty in the finest cloth if it makes hunger and unhappiness." Mahatma Gandhi
one of assignment goals is to use zero waste fabric or recycled fibric . and I like to try to use Jordan map as the pattern ,which is a very challenging shape since it is not a symmetric design beside my skills in this field still in armature level .
Some statistic reference I really get surprised by Statistics from sustain your style. and it shows how important to reuse fabric and save environment.
Inspiration¶
Recombine and reuse things and save environment and reduce as much as possible of all waste is quit very possible to achieve.
During my investigating about what to make I was review Julie Merlino work which led me to know more about Elisabeth Jayotand to know more about Frangment Garments, an inspiring project around modular fashion, zero waste and no seam system."
Design and Fabrication¶
I was inspired from my country and I took the jordan map as inspiration for reconfigurable structure.
- [1] Finding a pattern and try to make connection and joins It is challenging as I mention it above so my advice to others it is strongly recommended to use simple pattern & symmetric design such as square or circle when you dealing with joins as unsymmetrical shape it take long time to figure out the shape . I designed the map in Rhino and added female and male connections and duplicated the pattern to nest the shapes according to the size of the leftover fabrics.
Below here my ups and down:
- [2] cutting Felt fabric pattern on leaser printer to check the connection when printing on leaser printer we have to check the material power from the laser printing software as we cutting Felt Fabric we choose as following picture :
so the Laser cutting settings for felt using "Trotec Speedy400" Machine was as following :
- Power: 70
-
Speed: 2
-
[3] Redesign and correctness phase After many trying I changed the Design of the jordan map and will make new design for the bags: Below is the suggested bag design with pattern in paper :
-
[4] Final
-
In order to compete bag pattern it is better to accomplish zero waste technique it is better to choose Tot bags design or choose symmetric pattern.
below picture's is the final design on fusion & inskcape software :
New bags Design in Fusion :¶
I create new skectch on fusion and try to have semetric design "geometric" based on circlue and squre pattern .as bellow picture , i use circular patern function oin fusion to multiple my shape then i add made and femal joint to the pattern for interlocking the pieces
here is final design composed of 2 combination of square joints pattern and one cross-like shape.
After that I exported the sketch from Fusion in DXF to Inkscape to nest the files before cutting.
Nesting on Inkscape design:¶
In order to cut the fabric on the leaser cut we have to use inkscape softare to adjust the nesting and positions of shapes on the sheet to make sure to have zero waste result. Double lines can be removed here also to save machining time for example.
Below is the instruction for cutting with Trotec leaser cut through the Job Control Software :¶
- Power: 70
- Speed: 2
