7. Computational Couture¶
Research & Inspiration¶
After the lecture with Julia Kroener, I got excited and wanted to explore the world of 3D printing. Her eye-catching designs are inspiring which helped me understand the 3D fabrications and applications on different materials.

3D Printing¶
Checkout for more information about the 3D Printing technology in detail from the Fabricademy 2024 global lecture
Rhino and Grasshopper¶
I followed the tutorial from the global lecture and and youtube tutorials, to get to know the program better.
From last year’s participants Dinesh Kumar’s documetation was also helpful
Parameters: Grasshopper consists of two primary types of user objects: parameters and components. Parameters store data, whereas components perform actions that result in data.
Components: The color of the component on the canvas indicates its state. An active component becomes green as shown below.
3D Printing And Materials¶
When it comes to 3D printed clothes, the practices are mostly limited to art pieces or haute couture for major fashion designers. 3D printing in fashion is an interesting avenue for designers and artists interested in creating complex geometric designs and wearable art.
3D printing in fashion, is used to create accessories, build prototypes and manufacturing tools, boost sustainability efforts, and expand customization options.
3D printing could be also used to supplement parts of a whole design, like embellishments, accessories, and buttons.
Materials¶
- PLA-fast, safe and reliable
- ABS- tough, stable and impact resistant
- HIPS- rigid, impact resistant and dissolvable
- T45- impact and heat resistant
- TPU- semi-flexible and resistant to wear and tear
- HDPE- strong and solvent resistant
- PETG- semi-rigid and impact resistant
- NYLON- flexible, durable, corrosion resistant
-materials with a flexible nature, as TPU, can be used to add accent pieces or unique embellishments onto the garment themselves.
Printing on Textiles¶

3D PRINTING MATERIALS¶
-
TPU filament - Thermoplastic Polyurethane, is a flexible filament known for its elasticity, durability, and resistance to abrasion and oils
-
PLA filament - Polylactic Acid, is a biodegradable and bioactive thermoplastic polymer derived from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugarcane
-
PETG - Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol, is a type of 3D printing filament that combines the advantages of both PLA and ABS, known for its durability, high strength
-
ABS - Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene
Printing Proccess¶
Testing the 3D printer and adjust the settings
Working with transparent TPU material
Printer settings with Ultimaker Cura that generates information for height, amount, density and other important properties of layers, as well as the timing of the printing process in a G-code form. I Adjusted the material scale on a lower point for testing. For another design I changed the scale to 3mm
Printing time: 3 hours
Before printing, we need to prepare the printing bed and nozzle. In this case, we heated up the nozzle to 234 degrees. The temperature of the nozzle will depend on the printing material and the design being printed.
start with printing the outer lines of the design and the first layer of the board where the hexagon shapes will be starting to print after
Printing the first layer of the design
I then used different settings to create the hexagon grid without the board
Made sure that the clips where holding the piece of textile in a way that it doesn't bent
You can control the nozzle's movement using the M17 function in the UltiMaker Cura program. This command activates the stepper motors on a 3D printer during the printing process.
When the printing eneded, I removed the textile 3D printed piece with a spatula carefully
# Final Geometry
Looks like a grid on a board game
The design was as I expected but want to make another one with higher extrusion but it needs more hours to be done.
- in the making of 3D printing on textile and trying out more filamets
- combine this design with wearables and make the hexagons light up like Christmas lights
