WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT
Student checklist
- Include some inspiration: research on artists or projects that work with modules and zero waste systems
- Document, Design and prototype with paper and scissors modular configurations and interlocking connections
- Document, Design and prototype digitally your modular configurations and interlocking connections in 2D
- Document the process of testing and laser cutting your designs, including the machine settings, material type and thickness.
- Laser cut the modules. Create a modular or seamless garment, showing that the connection is well-designed and holds the pull/stretch. Document the assembly process and tests
- Upload the fabrication PDF file at oscircularfashion.com, in 1:1 scale accompanied by 1-5 pictures (preferably in white background)
- Submit some of the modules to the analog or digital material library of the lab. (Recommended size 20cm x 20cm) (extra credit)

INITIAL RESEARCH
SHE MAKE CHALLENGE
- Be inspired by the French "parure" is a set of various items of matching jewellery, which rose to popularity in the 17th century Europe. Reserved for royalty and the wealthier classes, no woman was considered socially acceptable without a complete wardrobe of jewellery that defined her status, strength and political power.
- "The Parures are exceptional pieces that combine the development of traditional know-how from around the world and the inventiveness of haute couture. They will be made from recycled materials from fabrics, tarpaulins, kakemonos, flags, clothing, sneakers or any object related to sport. We leave it to everyone to imagine an intermediate piece between clothing and accessory, which can change a simple outfit into a more formal outfit dressed." SHE MAKE CHALLENGE
Q&A
- Q: WHAT IS MODULAR FASHION?
- A: ‘multi-functional’, others prefer ‘convertible’ or 'adaptable’. The semantics may vary but, conceptually speaking, modular fashion translates into a garment, shoe or accessory that changes shape or form for different purposes.
- A: My perspective on the word modular is a one shape only, that could be repeated and resized, this view comes from my background in graphic design but…I wonder if limiting to only one shape in order to modular is a too tight concept for me. In the world of research in my opinion there shouldn’t be barriers limiting your ideas; I wonder if they are actually my starting points?
- A: "Modularity or modular clothing refers to garments that have detachable or adaptable elements that can be easily removed, swapped out, or remodelled to create different styles, lengths or overall look in response to changing fashions or need."
- “Customers are not going to change behaviour or adapt to modularity, unless it either saves them money or makes life easier, like the zip or Velcro or press studs,” he says."

STAR BEAD EXPERIMENT
...FAIL...RE-TRY...FAIL...RE-TRY...FAIL...GO-BACK
-
During week 03, I maintained a hands-on approach while experimenting with various shapes and fabrics ans subtracting techniques. My curiosity centered around comprehending how different fabric thicknesses influence modular forms. In my creative process, I combined upcycled and deconstructed garments with new materials.
-
Specifically, my focus was on looking at how the fabric choice interact with the modules. With a keen eye on felt and secondhand sportswear fabric as potential choices for the She Make Challenge. Initially, my patternmaking efforts gravitated towards triangular modular designs, and I leveraged Illustrator for digital file creation. Subsequently, I delved into laser cutting experiments, which were many...
-
As my project evolved, I transitioned to working with less structured fabrics, placing emphasis on lightweight and waterproof materials to enhance overall functionality e.g nylon, lycra.

JELLYFISH PONCHO
"JELLYFISH"
Jellyfish is a simple circle with 11 slots radiating from the center which is the slot with the form of a cross for the head. The waved stripes are meant to be weaved into the slots and they interlock themselves as the fabric is wool and poly which makes it quite stiff and holds well.
