Bring the Inside Out !

C O N C E P T

The inspiration begins with my life-drawings. For some years now I have found myself completely obsessed with trying to capture the human figure, through drawing, painting & sculpture. With this passion, I found myself wanting to know more about Anatomy and what was under the body, in order to understand it better. Inspired by this, I wanted to make a series of garments that visually reveal the layers of the body, show the unseen & animate anatomy!

In order to bring these pieces to life, I have incorporated an interactive element, as well as combining traditional techniques with modern technology.

Influenced by old medical encyclopaedia's using ‘folding out’ illustrations to describe the layers of the body, I decided to incorporate this. Hence, the introduction of the three characters in this project: Skin, Muscles & Skeleton.

S K I N - Inspired by classical sculpture and bodybuilders doing ballet, this design consists of a sculpted bodice, shaped using Biomaterials and an inflatable latex arm.

M U S C L E S - The front consists of two-tone 3D printed muscles. When turning around the back reveals madder dyed yarn.

S K E L E T O N - The final piece embodies the bones, in which will illuminate in the form of an X-Ray, using electronics and pleated organza to distribute the light.

I believe the process is just as interesting as the finished piece, so I have created a short film that shows a small snippet of the making and mechanisms of each piece.

I filmed and photographed each piece in the Theatrum Anatomicum located in our beloved Amsterdam lab. Behind you can see Rembrandt's painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp created in 1632 which was originally created for this room. Only afterwards did I realise how much I was inspired by it.

Upon reflection, I realised that the result of this project was less of an accurate representation of a generic human body, but more, a self portrait. Completely unintentional, but capturing a bit of myself and my surroundings at this moment of time.
