BEYOND BLUE¶
Beyond Blue is a sustainable fashion initiative by Zander Webster, developed during the 2024–2025 Fabricademy program. The project reimagines denim through a modular, zero-waste lens, blending traditional craftsmanship with experimental design techniques. The aim is to create a three-piece modular clothing collection—consisting of a jacket, pants, and a bag—crafted entirely from recycled denim. Each piece is designed to be interchangeable, enabling multiple outfit variations and emphasizing both functionality and sustainability.
Targeting the secondary clothing market and small-batch production models, Beyond Blue seeks to shift the perception of recycled denim from niche material to a versatile foundation for innovative design. The project integrates digital fabrication tools with sustainable textile practices to minimize material waste, extending even to the development of denim-based packaging. Additionally, it explores the use of bio-material coatings to enhance the tactile and visual qualities of repurposed denim.
Though initially developed in Barcelona, the long-term vision of Beyond Blue includes expanding its framework in Montreal, Canada. There, the plan is to collaborate with local institutions, designers, and communities to develop a network supporting regenerative clothing systems. This expansion also aims to foster knowledge exchange across geographic and cultural boundaries, deepening the project's engagement with circular design.
Drawing on the cultural legacy of denim, contemporary modular fashion, and speculative design thinking, Beyond Blue moves beyond trend cycles to offer a durable, adaptive alternative to fast fashion. The project underscores the power of material storytelling, demonstrating how design can honor the past while proposing new futures. By emphasizing adaptability, local production, and environmental accountability, Beyond Blue presents a vision for fashion that is both deeply rooted and forward-thinking.
