9. Textile as scaffold

This week, my goal was to use the technique of using textile for composites to design and build a small coffee table. I started by drawing a mindmap of my design.

I broke this project down into two parts: building the concrete structure and constructing a knit sleeve with conductive patch.

Part I

Research

In order to finalize the mould dimensions and structure, I needed to explore two things with wood: (1) the width and height dimensions of the individual wooden pieces in the mould in order to minimize the number of pieces I needed to cut to obtain a clean cylindrical shape, and (2) how to hold the mould up once the concrete is filled in and still wet and how the depth of the wooden pieces affects this property. I chose Lycra as my textile to hold the mould up.

For (1), I used cardboard on muslin to get a priliminary sense of what the wooden pieces should look like. I found that .. is the best width and height. For (2), I did xyz.

Process

  • Cutting the wood
  • Wood + textile
  • Sewture
  • Casting concrete
  • Removing the mould
