Week 2: Biochromes

Natural inks, dyes, pigments & modifiers

For the second week we cooked up natural colours and dyes and modified them.

Research & Inspiration

"Taking an interest in waste streams and fouraging I went through my kitchen cupboards, freezer and storage and left overs to find natural colour sources"

"In my freezer I found avocado pips, which I use to make cosmetics, scrubs, facemasks and such. Also I added them to smoothies for breakfast. Also, I found a sepia ink gland, I took from a sepia I cooked up. I saved it to make a pigment for wallpaint. In my cupboard I found some fresh tumeric. Some red yeast rice, or ankak was also in the cupbaord. It is used in chinese cuisine to colour food, like pork, red. In my basement I had some black iron oxide, a pigment I used in a caseine paint before. It is made by burning steelwool with a battery. I also looked around the local farmers market, het I found fresh tumeric, walnuts, quince, onions, pink garlic and more avocados. Walking around the neighbourhood I spotted a Shiso plant, it is used in Japan to colour ume su, or plum vinegar."
