4. Biochromes

This week I worked on Biochriomes, natural liquid dye, Ink, and recycling a dye bath.

dye bath

cotton fiber

I made two dye baths with madder root and turmeric beloww are steps and video. step1 scoring. 2tbs of soduim carbonate: I put soduim bicarbonate in oven at 200°C for 1hr to convert it to get soduim carbonate. no tanning applied. step2 Mordanting with alum. for cotton fiber I weght my fibers and I add 15% WOF of alum to a warm water + fiber + stir for 30min or 1hr. step 3 is preparing dye bath. -with madder 1 WOF in hot water for intense red and 1/2 WOF in hotwater for peach stir agter its take color. I washed the cotton and dried it again. -with turmeric I used 1/8 WOF in hot water stir dry then clean and dry here are results.

animal fiber

I used ordinary wool smae steps of treating cotton. the exception is we dont need to use any tanning for wool and dont go high in temperature apply 20% WOF for mordabnting with alum.

recycled dye bath

to percipitae the liquid dye I add 10gr alum and 5gr soduim carbonate let it percipitae then filter with coffe filter. detauls on video

ink

I made ink with madder roots+ water+ heat,then matter root+ soda+ heat , hibiscus+ vinegar+ ethanol, hibiscus+soda + ethanol, turmeric+ ethanol, turmeric +venegar+ heat, turmeric+ soda+ ethanol I use water or ethanol to solve the pigment, adding soda with make the ink more basic ,adding vinegar will make solution acidic see ph information
