Inspiration

Palestinian embroidery

3,000 years of women's history on a dress

"Tatreez" is an Arabic word for a unique style of Palestinian cross-stitch embroidery. Distinguished by rich colors and textures, it originated in the Middle East some 3,000 years ago. the craft has always been exclusively a women's territory, and it's been passed down from mothers to daughters like family recipes influenced by each generation

There are many stitches in Palestinian embroidery, all starting with the X stitch. While working on my first set of jewelry inspired by Palestinian embroidery stitches, I thought of making a set of outfits that could be built from one X. Or make a ready-made fabric that contains the forms of stitches without the need to embroider them. I thought of some solutions before joining the academy, and I have developed some of them now.

Prototyping and testing by paper

If you turn the x into a square, you can easily implement the shape, but it is not easy to design the x, and I want to get the x and not the square, I thought of a way, but it was not entirely successful. Unless you use colors or close some triangles and open others. But it was a good attempt to have a great time with our grandchildren and their friends at the weekend.

Prototyping and testing by Rhino and leaser cutter

Then I thought of other solutions, a system that could give me an X or a closed square, I thought about colors as well, I developed the system on paper. I did a lot of experiments and measurements and got a close result.

Making of the pattern

Time ran out and I had to collect all these pieces last night. Of course there are some problems that I will work on developing later. But I am happy with the result, which was not easy to reach.

  • laser cutting process adding pictures of the settings and nesting and the testing
  • which materials you used?
  • upload PDF or Rhino files
  • what didnt work? what needed to be improved?
  • please also upload the project to oscircularfashion.com (a couple of hi res images + suggested laser cutting settings)
