6. Computational Couture¶
For this week assigment I did not know what to expect, I had no experience with Grasshopper so I did some research on previews years participant to get a better understanding of this week
Inpo: Riley Cox Barbara Rakovska
Aproximations to Grasshopper¶
At the BDC we had a inicial Grasshopper tutorial, so my first aproach to it was desining a simple vase.
Parametric desing¶
Next step was exploring paramentric deing, so I use some youtube tutorials to generate something, I follow steps but then changed the parameters in order to obtain a more "original" desing
Magnetic field
This are some images of the process and playing with parameters, the image below is the final result with the stl. archive for free download.
Voronoi
Then I tryied with voronoi diagram, thats already in the grasshopper library. I followed up a youtube tutorial and then I played with the values to obtain 3 really diferent designs althought they started the same way. I chose one of them and that was the desing I 3D printed
3D Printing¶
Ultimaker Cura: slicing software that prepares the 3D model for the printing process, were you can read and adjust parameters => layer height - print speed - infill density, => important to keep an eye on the estimated print time and material
For my first sample at the BDC we decided to print fabric, so the way to do it is printin the 10% of de desing and then pause it and settle the fabric, which has to have an open wave so that the material can get in touch and bond throught the fabric.
Once you printed 10% on the plate you strechen your fabric over the plate and de printed material => strechen really good with magnets or clips, any lump can damage the desing
3D Printer Parameters
MATERIAL: PLa Iris color
WIDTH: 1.75 mm
EXTRUDE TEMPERATURE: 210º
BED TEMPERATURE: 60º
TIME: 40 MIN
Final results¶
I printed the same desing two times but changin the colors of the PLA and fabric, the parameters stayed the same, Both went very well, expect the White sample got burned a little bit with the heat of the printer because it was more dificult than the blue fabric to strecht it nice.
