📖 Project Name¶
Threads of Tradition
✨ Concept¶
Threads of Tradition is a textile storytelling project inspired by Armenian legends, symbols, and the desire to reconnect with cultural roots. Designed especially for children and teenagers, it takes the form of a soft, embroidered book where each fabric panel tells a mythological story using appliqué, layered textiles, and hand embroidery.
The goal is not just to preserve forgotten folklore—but to bring it back to life in a way that feels playful, interactive, and deeply rooted in meaning.
🌿 Inspiration¶
The idea for this project began during my visit to the Lusik Aguletsi House-Museum in Yerevan. Surrounded by traditional Armenian costumes, pottery, and jewelry, I was struck by the symbolic depth of each item. Symbols of protection, fertility, and spiritual connection weren’t just decorative—they were stories passed down through generations.
I’ve always believed that symbols have the power to connect us to something deeper. As I explored Armenian myths and folklore, I realized how many of these stories were being forgotten—even within Armenia. This realization sparked a desire to keep them alive in a form that’s meaningful and accessible.
🧵 Visual Language¶
- Each page of the book is a textile panel, layered with fabric, embroidery, and storytelling
- Symbols and motifs are drawn from Armenian mythology and ancient patterns
- The design feels soft and touchable, encouraging interaction and curiosity
- Color palettes are inspired by natural Armenian landscapes — earth tones, soft reds, deep blues, and ancient golds
🛠 Process¶
- Research: Armenian legends, myths, protective symbols, traditional costume elements
- Sketching: Developing each story into visual form
- Textile techniques: Appliqué, hand embroidery, layering fabrics, symbol placement
- Construction: Sewing pages together into a soft textile book
- Testing: Sharing with children to observe engagement and improve storytelling
🎯 Purpose & Impact¶
This book was made to be shared in museums, galleries, and classrooms, turning static folklore into a living, tactile experience. It invites kids and teens to learn about their heritage in a way that’s creative and emotional—through touch, story, and symbol.
Threads of Tradition is not just about memory—it’s about curiosity, identity, and the stories we pass on.
💭 Reflections¶
This project helped me connect more deeply to my culture and realize how design can be a form of storytelling. By stitching these stories into fabric, I hope to preserve the past while also inspiring new generations to explore their roots with pride and wonder.
